Kyoto Protocol
Opened for signature December 11, 1997 in Kyoto, Japan
Entered into force February 16, 2005.
Conditions for entry into force 55 parties and at least 55% CO2 1990 emissions by UNFCCC Annex I parties.
Parties 164 countries (as of July 2006)
. Bush said of the treaty:
This is a challenge that requires a 100% effort; ours, and the rest of the world's. The world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases is China. Yet, China was entirely exempted from the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. India and Germany are among the top emitters. Yet, India was also exempt from Kyoto … America's unwillingness to embrace a flawed treaty should not be read by our friends and allies as any abdication of responsibility. To the contrary, my administration is committed to a leadership role on the issue of climate change … Our approach must be consistent with the long-term goal of stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. [10] President Bush Discusses Global Climate Change .

inspite of high sounding phrases, the american govt has continuallly refused to sign in any of the global treaties that stands in its way of the so called progress that has become the trademark of america - a destructive progress that is making the americans search for greener pastures in the form of other planets after they denude and destroy this one.

curiously that's because of the fact our greatest Minister does not have self assurance Kyoto would be efficient, does not have self assurance that's elementary for Australia as a u . s . a . many times run on coal (even if the settlement does take that into attention), does not have self assurance in putting objectives for carbon emissions and he claims that ratifying the settlement could fee jobs. I rather do no longer agree together with his determination, yet fortunately we are having an election quickly so John Howard's reign of terror is with any luck coming to an end. opposition chief Kevin Rudd is in finished help of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Bush administration has refused to sign the Kyoto Accords.

Written in 1998, and in effect since 2005, the accord requires countries to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Some 141 countries, accounting for 55% of greenhouse gas emissions, have ratified the treaty, which pledges to cut these emissions by 5.2% by 2012.
