My dog is almost 2 years old. Given his age is over a year, is it ok to get him neutered (I know most people fix their pets before this time)?

You can neuter a dog anytime after it is grown - and it is Bob Barker recommended.

Although it is preferable to neuter them by 6 months of age, it is never too late. As long as he is in good health, he should do just fine. In fact, by having him neutered you are still reducing his chances of prostate problems and eliminating the chance for testicular cancer. He may take a little longer to recover and be a bit more painful...I would suggest getting pain meds from the vet if they're not required. You may see some change in hormone-related activities (marking, etc) but don't expect a big improvement as some have become habit for him at this point.

I know it is bad to do it before 6 months since they need the hormones, but afterwords is fine. All animal shelters, which are caring about animals, neuter dogs and cats of any age before they give them away. So if it is okay for government regulated and caring people neuter, then I assume it is quite fine. If there is a problem the receptionist would say when you called to make the appointment.

While technically a cat or dog can be spayed/neutered at any age, it is best to perform the surgery while the animal is young and healthy to reduce anesthetic and surgical risks.

I personally recommend that a dog be neutred around six months old.
Neutering your dog or cat at this age protects him from developing aggressive behaviors and potentially life-threatening prostate disease. Obviously spaying and neutering helps decrease the number of unwanted puppies and kittens that overwhelm our humane societies

Hope that was of help to you. For more information you can visit this site.

In most cases, it's never too late to neuter. The benefits of neutering will help your dog live a longer healthier life by avoiding certain types of cancers.

The added benefit is no accidential litters of neighborhood female dogs.

You should get your dog fixed as soon as you can. We have a dog that is 14 years old, and they said that she couldn't have gotten fixed after 10. That is considered very mature for her breed. I think it just depends. But now she could have many complications because she was never fixed. We bred her once, and that's why we never got it done. Now she has a lump, and the vet thinks it could be breast cancer. (Yes, apparently dogs get it too.) She has to have surgery to remove it. Get your doggie fixed soon. It will keep him healthier in the long run.

No there is no age limit. It is time to have him neutered. They can pick up a lot of bad habits by this time. That is why many people have them neutered younger, they won't mark their territory and they are less likely to fight for the girls. Good luck.

i believe it's perfectly safe to do so, ask your vet for sure. i know a lot of shelters insist that all their pets be neutered before adoption, and it would stand to reason that there are all ages of animals going through there. good choice on neutering though, there are so many unwanted pets out there, it's just so sad....

It is okay to get him neutered now. It is healthier for him - no risk of testicular cancer. It will also make him into a better dog - no more trying to escape after those girls in heat.
