first of all, make sure its clean.
don't do it in the tub..
bath water is dirty.
secondly, trim it before hand, makes it easier to see what ur doing, resulting in less slips and resulting in less irritation.
third make sure ur using a new razor.
forth, and last use a moisturizing cream before and after!

I use to have this problem. The reason why you see red spots is because shaving has irritated the skin. To prevent this, use a really good shaving cream that not only protects the skin from the razor but moisturizes as well. And also make sure your razor is sharp. Dull razors only tear and grab at the skin. And you don't want that because you could end up getting really uncomfortable ingrown hairs.

Always use a sharp razor and a good shaving cream. Soap doesn't work very well. When you are done, if you have the time, use an aloe based lotion on the skin to soothe it and reduce the possibility of getting ingrown hairs. You can also opt to get waxed but that is pretty painful but it lasts longer and you are done quicker. Best razor to use is something with three or four blades and make sure that you rinse it after every pass. If you're daring, have your significant other do it for you.

There is a product called "Tend Skin". You can find it on line or in a salon that does body waxing. It is usually applied after shaving or waxing and prevents itching, redness and ingrown hairs. The price is around $20-$25USD. When shaving try shaving in the direction of hair growth and do not use any scented soaps or lotions. Chamomile tea works to also soothe the area.

Have a good long soak in a bath, softening the skin and the hair around the area. Then shave in the direction of the hair, slowly and carefully. Use a good moisturising cream afterwards, (careful not to get it into sensitive spots) Also, a new blade/razor each time you shave.

Plucking (tweezing), Shaving, Depilatory creams and Waxing are temporary hair removal methods.
Waxing usually lasts for 3 weeks, but it is painful.
Electrolysis and laser hair removal are "permanent" hair removal methods but are expensive and you have to find a trained professional, otherwise your skin could be damaged.

Don't shave down there! just clip close with a fine pair of scissors.. You can develop all kinds of infections from shaving your pubes.
