Yes as a civilian contractor to the DoD you can be a translator. You would need to have a Top Secret Clearance with a lifestyle polygraph before they will let you work though.

im not completely sure. all the civilians and GS guys i know have a security clearance. i dont know how a civilian goes about applying for one to work for the military as an interpreter. is there an AF recruiting station nearby? that would be the best place to look, they should have all the info you need. lemme know what happens tho. i can ask around here and find out for u

Why dont you just sign for 4 years in the AF. Most contracters are taking people that are getting out of the military because they have been trained and already knows the aspects of the job. Basically if you are just trying to go in and get the job someone with prior military is going to have an edge over you.

Linguist is one of the few jobs that they need people in....

As in being a linguist? The only ones I am aware of are military, but more and more of our jobs are being given to civilians.
