1. It has been evolving for a couple thousand years, from widely disparate sources.
2. No one took the time to come up with good rules, until it was too late. Now, all attempts to make comprehensible rules are squashed.
3. It doesn't help that there are two types of Engligh. British Isles English, and American English.
4. Americans, in particular, think rules are made to be broken. Ain't that right?
5. English speakers have a long history of spelling bees? Why ruin a favorite passtime (er, for some...)

No more difficult than it is to Nederlands, Francais, or Deutsch speakers. Most Spanish speaking nations do not boost English as a public education requirement, though, so adults are not likely to use it or speak it w/any proficiency; as opposed to NL, Denmark, and Sweden where it's practically compulsory.

I know what you mean. If you are trying to learn more spellings, etc., the best thing is to read a lot. The rules can only take you so far since they are not always applicable.
It is difficult because no one controlled it as it was developing. The words are from other languages. It's a hodge podge.

Why? Because people like me have to 'troll' their friends because they're so picky with the English language.
I personally like the complexities of it. Although it really bothers me when I can't find a word that works... out of all of the words in it.

english is from a lot of languages, stemming from germanic with latin and greek in it etc. i understand where you're coming from, when i had to learn english coming to the states it was very confusing. all you can do is practice; american english has a lot of those "exceptions".

when you're raised to memorize it, it's not so bad. My explanation is, we weren't ruled an empire in latin. If that doesn't cut it blame Britain for all those grammatical rules.
