Where I live in Cali, the beetle is considered more of a woman's car & if a guy drives one, people mock and call him "gay". Is it the same elsewhere too?

That car is generally made for girls. It comes with a sunflower. Usually I see pretty girls or really dainty/androgynous guys driving it. I've never seen a masculine guy driving it, or hooking up the car to feel more like a mans car. So I can see how it could be considereed gay if you buy one and drive it. It's like asking if it's gay or masculine to dress like and be emo. Most people would say, it's pretty gay.

Some cars most people consider feminine or macho. Beetle, Cooper, Miata = feminine. Humvee, Corvette, Viper = macho. Heck, anyone who thinks all Harleys are macho are even wrong: most bikers call Sportsers 'girl bikes', since many women have them now because they are light, while the guys have the Softails, Dressers & bigger bikes. It's all so silly, really. Some guy I know makes a quick initial asessment of potential women to date based on what they drive, and says he is pretty accurate. In our mobile society, we can't help but make quick judgement calls about someone by what they drive: Minivan = soccer mom. Big SUV = soccer dad. Convertible = college student or midlife crisis. Fancy European sedan = sucessful businessman. Too easy! And probably accurate 70% of the time.

Yes it is, but only if you leave that bouquet of flowers in it. Otherwise it's just kid of gay. But, then again, what do you think? If you think it's gay then don't get one. If you don't think it's gay then get one. You can get it painted something other then a pastel color and that would help. But for Gods sake...TAKE OUT THOSE FLOWERS!
I understand there is nothing on the road that corners as well as the new bug. It might be because it's already presmashed. It might also be because of the German engineering that is put into the suspension. I manage an auto parts store and I can honestly say I haven't had too many owners looking for parts. I've run a diagnosis on the OBD II system for only two owners in the past 4 years we've had the machine to do it.

ROFLMAO.

As a gay man, I gotta tell you we pretty much drive the "better cars" for the most part. However, VW's are CLASSICS in every sense of the word and there is nothing wrong with driving one. Anyone who says that has the mental iq of a donut.

Its pretty much the same around everywhere, unfortunately they drive really nice and deceptively have a crapload of room inside.

I'm 6 foot 2, my wife used to have a new beetle and I loved driving it cuz it had great headroom.

If that makes me gay, I guess I can stop blowing old men at the Greyhound Station downtown.

Sorry to hear where you live is so shallow and infantile minded. Here in Southern California people judge you by how you act and what you say. What you drive is more important fuel mileage wise and the women are impressed with intelligent decision making. I assume your concern was for the fairer sex! You don't really care what guys think , unless your gay of course!

I would say so. I don't see any men driving them. I'd go for the old-gen Beetles instead.

You should watch the movie "Born in East LA." He drives a hot pink Beetle, but it looks kinda cool.

The insecure and shallow-minded see many things as strange and threatening. They are the followers among us… and often the loudest!
The strong do (and drive) what they want. And they can keep a sense of humor about a good ribbing now and then!
