4lbs total is not very much weight at all. Increase weight until you can only do 7-10 squats.
Of course, be careful with form and have someone spot you to avoid mishap or injury. But if, for example, you go to a 20 lb. dumbbell in each hand (which won't require a spotter, a Smith rack or similar aparatus), can you still do 50 squats, or do you begin to feel the burn in your lower body muscles?
Be safe, and best to you.

Alter your feet position. Depends what angle of your but or legs that you are trying to work. Feet forward gets the burn. Slow each squats rise and raise to a slow rhythmn with perfect form every time. Clsoe you r eyes if you don't feel silly and feel the muscles you are working actually lift you and the weight. This does work to increase your form.
Pulse it - when you reach the level before you begin to raise hold it there and perform tiny pulses about 7 or 8 before raising.
Its not always about the actual weight, more emhasis needs to be on your form, rhythm and timing. (Been working out for 9 years) Hope this was some kind of help.

If you arent feeling the burn, look at your form. Are you going low enough? A good squat is one where your thighs are parellel with the ground or a bit lower(not too low, its bad for your knees) also you might try less reps and more weight.. Put a bench underneath you when you do them. Or...... You could try lunges. I guarentee you will feel those the next morning.
p.s thanks-this puts me at level two. good luck . hope it helps

Use a long barbell weight on your shoulders and use more weight than 21lbs. Make sure you are putting your weight on your back heels and lifting from there too. Make sure to go nice and deep when you squat.

Lose the hand weights and put a 20 lb bag of something (Cat food, kitty litter, bird seed, whatever) across your shoulders while you excercise. When you have adjusted to the weight, add another bag, or get a forty or fifty lb bag. Remember to keep your head UP!

What they made us do on the sweem team is squat and jump up out of it. Burns! Burns the lungs, too.

Use the barbell as told before, make sure your upper legs go down as far as paralell with the ground, there are devices you can use that beep when you have gone down far enough.
