European's Applying for Residency
It is not necessary to apply to become a resident in Spain if you are employed, self-employed, a student or a pensioner receiving a Spanish pension.
If you are working and paying social security, you and your family are automatically entitled to residency. This is not a complicated procedure.
It is necessary to apply for residency if you are retiring to Spain, of independent means or are not currently paying into the Spanish Social Security System.
It is now relatively simple to become a resident and it is important to complete all the necessary steps for example:
1· opening a bank account
2· registering with the local town hall 'Padron',
3· registering motor vehicles,
4· obtaining medical cover etc.
A list of procedures can be obtained from a 'Gestor' who can advise you and complete these processes for you.
