My daughter failed her hearing test during her physical for Kindergarten and they referred her to an audiologist. She went for her appointment today, and we were told that she has fluid behind both of her ear drums. They are going to remove the fluid and put tubes in her ears. Has anyone had this done and can you give me some information on it?

It's a fairly common procedure. I've never had it done, but I know kids who have had numerous ear infections, and once they get the tubes, they have no more problems. The tubes come out on their own after a couple of years.

I know it's done under general anesthesia, and the whole surgery takes literally 15 minutes.

One thing to be cautious about - if your child has any pain or coughs up blood anytime in the 48 hours after the surgery, you need to take them to the ER immediately. That's NOT normal, and could be a big problem. (It's rare that it happens, I know of one case in the last 8 years out of hundreds of times this surgery has been done.)

If you have any reservations about this being done, go see a Ear, Nose, and Throat (Otolarygology) specialist for a second opinion. That's your right as a patient before any non-emergency surgery.

My son had it done when he was 3 or 4. The surgery is fairly quick and she should be home that same day. They make a small hole, insert the tube and it allows the fluid to drain. As the ear drum heals the tube will get pushed out.

My son's biggest complaint was that he thought he sounded funny.
