Old enough to support yourself legally - pay rent, pay all the utility bills, pay health insurance, car payment and car insurance, get a mortgage, get a good job with good pension benefits because you will need them since you won't have an education ... you get the picture??

I've lived in Ohio and Cali and it was 16 in both with your parents permission.

But may I recommend staying in school. I dropped out and I really regretted it for a very long time. I went back and worked a program almost like home school through my old high school and got my real diploma, not a GED, 10 years later. It was harder then while trying to work full time and make a mortgage and car payment every month but it was worth it. But I still wish I had just stayed and done it the 1st time.

Ok, so a little clarification. There is no set age to drop out, that kinda defeats the whole point of "dropping out". Here's the deal for CA.: you have a few options if school just isn't your gig, you may get your GED, go to continuation school, or do independent studies. For all three of those options you are required to be at least 16 years old. Now, if you're just going to drop out and screw school and getting your high school diploma then stop wasting your time, just drop out now and forget about it. If, however, you wish to get your diploma then you must wait until you're 16 and have parental consent (oh, yeah. Forgot to mention that whole "your parents have to give you permission" thing, at least until you're 18) Good luck!

I don't think they have an age where you are allowed to drop out. Some kids drop out way to early, and are stuck in dead end jobs for the rest of their lives.
As hard as High School can be, with all its pressures, etc, it's best to hang in there, and get that diploma.
Do you want to be a person, who asks "Do you want fries with that" Well that's what lies in store for those who drop out.

drop out any time you want, but why would you? GED? hard to get a job or college with a lousy GED. BTW, most drop outs are 15-16. Ultimately, do yourself a favor and stay in school and stick it out.

I would not recommend dropping out of high school. People who go back and get there GED are looked upon as incompentent by many job recruiters as they feel you couldn't even make it through high school the regular way. Stick with it....

I believe if you get your GED, you don't need to complete all the years of high school. I think that's how some of these kids become full time college students way before their time.
