I have full coverage insurance. I've heard people say no it won't pay, but it's just something they assume....no one I've talked to who say no, ACTUALLY knows any one that has happened to..I know it will not cover if you have liability only. Trying to see if anyone has had experience with this particular situation.

If you have comprehensive insurance, they will cover it. It does not matter that you left the keys in your car. Insurance companies do not take into account factors like that (I know this from adjusting many theft claims of this nature).

There are some responses that say you should not mention the keys thing. Actually, you should. The insurance company will want a police report. If you told the police about the key, they will find out anyway. Also, from experience, I can tell you that insurance companies are far more suspicious if someone has a theft under odd circumstances. The keys in the car thing is believable and would not have an impact on coverage.

They are correct. Your loss is what was stolen. When it comes to the vehicle, that is the keys (you left _all_ the keys to a brand new car... in the car?). I'm also betting you don't need to have your vehicle re-keyed and even if you needed to have a replacement key made, it does not cost $800. I just paid a claim where the person's truck was stolen and the keys were missing. To have a locksmith make a key from the lock it cost about $175 (key fob). Personal items are not covered under the auto policy, they are covered under a property policy such as a homeowners or renters policy. Your insurance should cover what it cost to replace _all_ the keys that were stolen. This should include programming the keys if its needed. While I doubt it would cost $800, I'm betting it would cost about $300 (including any door lock remote as well). After all this is done, consider yourself lucky that they did not steal your brand new vehicle with the keys you left in it. While the loss would be covered under insurance it's very possible you would be paid less then what you paid for the vehicle.

I used to handle lots of auto theft claims years ago. My boss always said, "You can't deny a claim just because someone does something not so smart." (Actually he used the word 'stupid,' but that's not politically correct.)

Your coverage is contractual. Unless you were in cahoots with the thief, your company owes you.

Make sure you report all the details to the police, a requirement for theft.

I would also tell the insurance company the truth. Not telling them about the keys can lead to problems down the road, especially if they recover the car and it has keys in the ignition.

Actually, if you have comprehensive insurance (which is a part of full coverage), theft is covered. Leaving your keys in your car is negligence, so that may be an issue.

Was the car stolen from a locked garage? If not, I don't think insurance will cover as the keys were (hidden or not) left in the car. I hope for your sake I'm wrong.

The policy should cover the stolen vehicle unless it specifically states otherwise. This is information coming from a licensed agent in the state of California.

State Farm Insurance would cover it.
