6-8 weeks of holiday only??

Oh geez, well that might mean you have more holidays during the school year. Or if not that, your school will end sooner than most other schools! So while you're on summer break, others are either taking exams or still in school.

Plus, you 're looking forward to seeing your friends, shopping, holidays, hanging out with your friends, right? Personally, I love the feeling of the first day of school. Don't get me wrong, the idea of being there for 8 hours, and waking up just to be there is not the greatest feeling. Try to make the most of it tho, with each passing day, you're closer to the last day of school, hehe!

The school board of a school district get together with many people and decide with much thinking, I'm pretty sure, of the schedule for the students. They're not giving a short vacation to give you a LOT of school.. that shouldnt be the case, you might just get more holidays. That's a good thing. Hope I helped! =)

I think 6-8 weeks is way too long. Though they do need a break for sure, it's too long. As a former reading teacher I know they forget a lot of what they had learned the previous year. More parents should take it upon themselves though to pick up where the teacher has left off. Continue reading with them etc. Summer school is also a great idea.
Idea: get together with parents and brainstorm how to fill in this gap educationally in some fun ways. Feild trips etc..
We need to realize that kids are capable of WAY more than we require of them. Time to up the standards.

This is actually a throw back to the days when kids were needed at home to help on the farm during the summer. It just goes to show how advanced modern education is - NOT. And just try pointing out that it's easier for kids to learn if they stick with it instead of taking a break, as has been proven. Now it's all about unions and expectations, etc. Good luck!

My kids have been off since 30th June and dont go back til 4th Sept!

I dont mind them being off, I keep an eye on them and watch what they are doing. What gets me is the people who open their door an boot the kids out from morning til night not knowing or caring what they are doing. We have 3 ten year olds around here who have continuously tortured people with their antics during the last week. If I thought my kids were up to half of what these brats are doing Id have them at the police station for a lesson!

For the most part, the reason was that most people were farmers [whether large or small] and the kids were needed on the farm. In summer the crops need a lot of attention, like extra water, weeding, etc.

If you are having a hard time relaxing then READ A BOOK, take a course, whatever.

It was originally so the children could help out with farming duties: bringing in the crops, cutting wheat etc (hence why it is towards the end of the summer and not right in the middle of it)... so I guess it was the government's idea from back several centuries ago.

Ever thought of trying to give your kids some farming duties to while away the time?!

In the early days our our country was largely rural, and the entire family was needed to bring in the harvest. The summer vacation was used to accommodate the farmers.

Things have changed, and some question the need for a vacation of this length.

My daughter is a teacher and, as her pay is so low, she needs to work, or take required college classes, during most of her vacation

Actually its more likely to be a woman playing her saviour role in defence of the little darlings that she cant actually be bothered to look after. She then sends them "up the road" to bother everyone else with their bad behaviour and foul language so as not to be at her door.
Still it means a lay in till mid day when you dont have to get them up fopr school and you have had 20 pints the night before.
Sorry to the good parents I just seem to have ended up in a place where no one cares about anything but themselves.

Sorry if I sound boring. But I hardle ever get to spend time with my kids and these holidays have been ace. I feel closer to them. And I'm not usually like that. However, I made sure i booked them into Holiday club on Thursdays and Fridays. I'm a cop out.

the idea behind the long summer holiday was harvesting. the kids where needed to help bring in harvest, so a compromise had to be reached on kids getting an education, and the needs of the home.
this is clearly out dated now, but as men are still dominant in legislation, of course they haven't come up with the idea that holidays can now be changed to reflect a more modern lifestyle.
us girls just have to wait for them to catch up!!!!
