Find a friend who is fluent and have him or her speak with you a little in Spanish every day. That is the best way to learn. I took Spanish all through high school and college, but my speaking improved the most when I studied for one semester in Puerto Rico, because I was forced to speak it with the friends I made down there. I struggled alot at first and had no confidence in what I was saying, but by the end of the semester I was pretty good at carrying on a conversation.

I have tried many different methods of learning new languages, and this works the best by far :
Practice by actually talking to Spanish people in Spanish.
Most people find it embarassing because they make a LOT of mistakes, but most people you try to speak to will appreciate yout effort and will help you when you make mistakes without thinking you are an idiot.
Buy a phrasebook to help you get started, and start using the common phrases on ALL the Spanish people you are in contact with.
DO NOT BE AFRAID to ask, or to make mistakes.
Your school Spanish will help you out with grammar issues later, but don't try to rely on it yet.

Parachute into the middle of Ecuador with nothing but an English-Spanish dictionary and try to get back home without starving to death or being kidnapped....or the milder version....go to a Spanish speaking country on a student exchange program.

1. Date someone who speaks Spanish
2. Work in a Spanish neighborhood
3. Work somewhere where all the employees speak Spanish
The key is immersion.

The best thing to do is to immerse yourself in a Spanish speaking environment so that you are forced to learn the language in order to communicate. Take a long vacation to Mexico, Spain, or a South American country (just not Brazil, they speak Portuguese).

look for the
(learn to speak spanish)
of the
(pimsleur )
series.
it is taped coversations that are translated and you can listen to them when you are exercising or in your car.
you can start with that.
you can find a downloadable copy using bearshare, just type
(pimsleur learn to speak spanish) in the search box.
the other best way is watching spanish tv programs with english subtitles.tv programs cover almost every aspect of life and its an easy way to learn comprehension.
when you do those things you will gradually find you understand what is said in spanish , but its harder to speak.
the best solution for that is to mix with spanish speaking people
(what you dont use, you lose.)

go to a Spanish speaking country and emerse yourself into the culture. If there are people in your community that speak it, try to engage in a conversation with them. Don't be embarrassed if you mess up b/c most likely they are happy to know that you are trying to communicate with them through their language.
