She itches more so after sleeping. She is not sleeping on any fabric or materials that would cause itching. The vet has seen her twice and says her skin looks great. She has been itching so much that her fur has broken off near her shoulders and neck (not complete hair loss, but shorter then the rest of her hair). Any tips or suggestions? Also, has anyone every heard of a maltipoo with hair breakage from itching? Thanks for any info, the poor thing will stop mid-play to scratch.

At first when reading this, I thought that your dog may have dermatitis or eczema. But, having seen the vet, they would have acknowledged that. How old is your pet? Is it very young and has just recently been adopted and/or removed from it's mother? That may be a form of separation anxiety. If not, your dog may be suffering from allergies. If you have changed any cleaning materials or detergents what-so-ever( heck even if you changed their food!), this is a very good reason as to why your dog is itching. Even more so if your dog is white (they are more suseptible to allergies and their hair is more dense.)
And last but not least possibility is an allergic reaction to any of the topical flea treatments. As you know, the treatment is placed directly between the shoulder blades and seeps into the skin. It's quite common for dogs to be allergic to some of them.
If the problem persists, please ask your doctor to do an allergy check. Good luck and I hope you find a resolution!!

Maltipoos can be a very good puppy. Now for some education. There is no breed known as a Maltipoo. I get what you are saying. The correct term is Maltese/Poodle mix. Maltipoo is some made up name. The mix can be a very nice dog. Or not. As with all puppies - what they grow up to be depends on the training the owner gives it. Poodles are smart and Maltese are cuddly. So the puppy may be all of that. Or may have gotten only the bad genes. It would not be wise to pay $900 for a mixed breed dog at the pet store. That is way too much money and very close to what you would pay for either purebred. Pet store puppies generally come from puppy mills or BYBs (back yard breeders). These people do not care about breeding for good qualities. All they care about is breeding lots of puppies, calling them cutesy names and getting big bucks. You are taking a big chance on buying one of these puppies. They could have major health issues at some point. Puppy mills keep the moms in cages and make them have litters every time they can. Moms never set foot on the ground and stay in a very small cage having babies after babies. When they can no longer do so - they are destroyed. So please do not buy pet store puppies as that encourages these people who should be put out of business. And would be if no one buys for pet store prices which are outrageous. I'm sorry if your daughter would be disappointed but that is WAY too much money. Might be better to take your daughter to your local rescue and see if there is a dog there that could use a good home. That could be a very good teaching experience.

I have a little Westie who itched a lot and also would chew her skin until she was raw. Try Sulfodene Medicated Shampoo from Wal-Mart. It's non expensive and works great. Also when your dog goes to the groomer tell them not to use any perfumes or smelly powder stuff. Another reason my dog was chewing and itching was she would get upset when my daughter came over and would not pay any attention to her. I make my daughter pet and talk to her and she doesn't chew. I guess it can all be in the head. The Vet will usually treat itching with chortizone. Didn't work on mine. Try it you'll like it.

The itchy dry skin might be related to the food you are feeding your puppy. Many dogs have allergies to corn products which is used by a lot of dog food manufacturers as a filler. Try switching to a premium food. One of my dogs itched all the time....then I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Since then she is doing much better. They do have a puppy formula...good luck with you pup!

Well, with ruling out dermatitis, eczema, and flebitis. Has the vet ruled out allergies? Oatmeal shampoo works for awhile, but the dog might have some allergies. My laso was allergic to flea bites and she done what you describe your maltipoo is doing.

Try buying a dandruff shampoo like Head and shoulders that contains Zinc.
Do NOT get the menthol kind.Pour some in a seperate bottle and dilute it with water.Give you dog a bath using it, rinse well. make sure you get down to her skin and rinse well.
One of my dogs use to scratch and sometimes get irritated skin ( shorthair dog) from tall grass. It works great.

I have a bichon frise. This breed is known for skin allergies. He is on a Lamb and Rice diet. I buy Iams brand. Also, limit trips to the groomer or make sure they are using hypo allergenic shampoos and colognes for your dog.

Does your dog wear a collar? If so, she could be allergic to the collar itself. Try getting a different collar.
