Let x be one number and 3x the other

1/x + 1/3x = 16/3

(3/3)*1/x + 1/3x = 16/3 Multiply by Lowest Common Denom

3/3x + 1/3x = 16/3 Add fractions

4/3x = 16/3 Multiply both sides by 3x & reduce

4 = 16x Divide both sides by 16 & reduce

x = 1/4

therefore the other number is 3x

3(1/4) equals 3/4

the two numbers are, 1/4 & 3/4

i am pretty confident that is the correct answer, because if you check by adding the reciprocals of these numbers u will get 16/3

Check

4 + 4/3 = 16/3

3/3 * 4 +4/3 =16/3

12/3 + 4/3 = 16/3

16/3 = 16/3

to the gal below me, if you add their reciprocals you will not get 16/3, you will get 1! try it

(3X)+X=16/3
4X=16/3 if we devide bith sides by 4,we get:

X=4/3 and this is the first no.

the other one is 3X which = 12/3 = 4.

so the numbers are : 4/3 and 4

if you add up 4/3 and 4 you get 16/3

y = 3x
1/x + 1/y = 16/3

1/x + 1/(3x) = 16/3

x + 3x = 3/16
4x = 3/16
x = 3/64

y = 9/64

3/64 + 9/64 = 3/16

The first sentence should give you an equation, and so should the second.

Substitute the terms of one equation in for a variable in the other equation, and you'll be able to solve for one of the variables. Plug that answer in and you'll get the answer for the other variable.
