Well, not quite. Man was originally genetically engineered to be a subservient species to not God, but the gods. In effect, a race of slave laborers. Eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, gave us a great deal more knowledge, and discernment. "Now man has become as the gods (Elohim), knowing both good, and evil". So you see, we are kind of an experiment gone awry.

Human beings were supposed to be as children. When you were a child, did your parents tell you about rape, war, famine, hatred, and death? No, you weren't supposed to know about that kind of knowledge and it was your parents job to protect you from the dangers and horrors that come from this knowledge. The gaining of knowledge, both beneficial and terrible is a two sided coin. When humanity ate of the Tree of Knowledge, they willingly gave up GOD's protection from the cruel reality that we experience today.

God did not want them to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. When he created man, man had the ability of choice; woman and man choose to partake of the tree (with Satan's temptation).
To not have the tree at all, would rob man of a choice; the choice to obey God or not.
