It's a human genetics book. I do enjoy the "Dummies" books as they truly are easy to understand and a nice touch of humor. I am just not sure if that would be confusing, though. I do have Malcolm Willis' book on genetics but thought Dummies might be a good primer.

I haven't read the "Genetics for Dummies" book myself so I can't directly answer your question but I sure do wish there could be more enthusiasm to learn genetics, among dog breeders.

I think one book that is very useful and basic for dog breeders is one by Claudia Orlandi. I have an older blog entry on it here:
http://www.cobankopegi.com/blog/2005/10/what-every-dog-breeder-should-know.html

I highly recommend the book for dog breeders and for those in my breed genre whom I mentor in different areas of canine genetics.

I have found that once some breeders become intrigued with the study of color genetics, in the dogs they are breeding, they do open up their minds to learning other aspects of genetics.

Like many subjects, there is a natural aptitude for some types of things. Many people experience 'math panic' when faced with rows of numbers. Others go cold when they see crossword puzzles. So as a teacher, one has to find the best way to approach someone elses' ability to learn. And that can be a challenge. :) I find that Willis' and other canine genetics books assume that people already have a grasp of some basic Mendellian principles so this tends to lose people right at the outset. The ABC's book does start with milk for the lambs, so to speak. :)

I doubt it will help much at all. It depends what genetic traits you are wanting to find out about as to what you read and research.

Color genetics are weird indeed in dogs, many have recessive color genes, when breeding you not only have to take color into account but the temperament and conformation of the dog as well.

You can go here and ask your question for further help if you do not get what you are searching for here.
