I've had a male Berniese Mountain dog and a female American Pitbull Terrier. Both were excellent companions and great with kids, though the terrier was much more work and harder to arrange pet sitting for.

Retreivers are good with kids. I have had a Lab and a Golden. Mostly any naturally floppy eared dogs have good temperaments. Bigger dogs tend to be mellower. Little dogs are good for apartments. Some purebred dogs have been overbred. You need to watch out for hip dysplasia in larger breeds. I think Dalmatians are really pretty buy I understand they are quite active and need a lot of care.
Getting a puppy is a real labor intensive commitment. Sometimes you can get a young dog or an adult dog at the pound but then you do not know what bad habits it might have or whether it has been abused. I have always gotten puppies.
Poodles are smart. My Golden was totally stupid, but very sweet.
I would not get a Pitbull or a Rottweiller. I do not want to worry about my dog eating the neighbor.
But really, almost any dog, properly brought up, can be a great friend. For example, my neighbor has a Pomeranian that is a spoiled jumping thing that will not go to the bathroom outside. I know another Pomeranian whose owner drives a truck. Spike drives around in the truck all day making deliveries and when he comes to our office he comes right in and everyone makes a fuss over him. He is one of the most personable dogs I have met.

I have two Jack Russell's. They live very happily with two cats and a nine year old child. I also have an assortment of very young nephews and nieces and friends children that visit all the time. the dogs are very good with all ages of people and other animals. Jack Russell's have had a bad rep in the past for being snappy but if you get a pup and introduce it to as many people, other dogs and animals as possible you won't have a problem. Be careful with it around rabbits and other rodents. They never completely lose that hunter instinct!!
The good thing about JR's is that you get a big dog in a little dogs body. Oh and they are hilarious to watch playing. Real characters

Did you know there are over 400 differant breeds?! Best thing to do is go to the pet store or book store and look in breed encyclopedias or books with breed sections. They'll give you what category, like herding, sighthound, gun dog, toy etc. It'll tell you climate preferance, personality type like if it is good or bad with kids, training, guarding ect. I have two and constantly look though them. Plus if you have a passion for dogs, it is so much fun to learn about differant breeds. If you are a new dog owner, these books might make you passionate about dogs. that's what happened to me 1 and a half years ago when I adopted a puppy and now I train dogs for a living. Who knew?!

Hi.
I don't think that there is any certain dog breed that make good pets.
It's all about you and what dog you like or which dog you are attracted to.
It would be wrong for instance to go out and buy a Jack Russell because you have had a lot of answers telling you that they are the best pet, if when you look at another breed say an Afghan for instance and think to yourself that this is a beautiful dog and wish that you had one or think to yourself oh that dog is absolutely gorgeous.
Because you will never totally be satisfied with any dog unless it's the one that you like and the one that you have chosen.
Look through all of the breeds and see which one appeals to you the most and when you find a dog that to you is the most gorgeous dog that you have ever seen and know in your heart that there is not any other breed out there that you like better, then this is the dog for you.
Everyone is different and we all like different breeds for a variety of reasons.
I could say to you Afghans are the best because I used to breed them when I was younger or I could say now that White long haired German Shepherds are best because I have 3 puppies at the moment which are the most adorable puppies I have ever seen as they look like little polar bears but what is right for me may not be right for you.
Any dog can be trained and if it is done the right way it will be loyal gentle and faithful to you and your family and friends for as long as it lives.
Remember dogs aren't just a pet, they are part of your family and part of your life which could be with you for a very long time.
My last German Shepherd lived up to the grand old age of 21 and still looked like a young dog when she died.
My vet told me that she lived as long as she did because she was well looked after, content and just didn't want to leave me.
She never suffered she was never ill but she was out the back chasing a cat out of the garden and she had a stroke.
She had been part of my family for a very long time.
So you see at the end of the day if you chose the right dog for you to be part of your family it could be with you for a very long time.
So go on look at all the breeds until you find the breed for you, don't have a dog just because someone else says this or says that, have a dog because you wan't it and you fall in love with it then you will be rewarded for all the love care and attention that you give it as it will love you back until the end of his or her life.
I wish you all the luck finding the best dog for you.

it's not a matter of what breed, it's all about how you are as a dog owner. most behavior problems you here about are a result of either abuse or neglect. and neglect isn't always in the form of not paying any attention at all. it can be as simple as not taking the dog for walks or not letting the dog out to go potty often enough. i love my dog and she gets better treatment than i do for the simple fact that she can't tell me if i'm doing things wrong or if she doesn't feel good. she gets the best food and treats full of vitamins and goes to the dog park to play ball. also one other thing about exercise is that dogs listen better when they're really tired. remember this, exercise, discipline then affection in that order. run the dog til it's tired, then work with it for obedience and then give it treats and love. as for what dogs are "typically" good dogs consider your space, if you're around small kids and the time you have to exercise the dog. some dogs will want to run all day everyday while some don't really care that much. smart dogs are the way to go but they need you teach them things or they chew up your stuff and act like freaks. i have a german shepard mix that is great with kids and other dogs. great with people in general and very quick at picking up things i teach. but they do get big. i like labs most of the time but lots of energy. smaller dogs that i've been around are westhighland white terriers, yorkies, mini dachsunds mini dobermans. border collies are very very smart and great dogs but there again high energy. and in all honesty, pittbulls. they a very loyal, gentle fun loving dogs that wouldn't hurt a fly. it's the people that train them poorly or for the wrong reasons that make them hurt other dogs or people. just make sure you have the time to make the dog a good dog. good luck!

Mutts or mixed breed dogs (you can get one at the pound) almost always make better pets than "breed" dogs, because pedigree dogs are, by definition, in-bred. Inbreeding exaggerates the problems any particular breed has, so mutts (in general) tend to be better-natured animals.
Having said that, there are many breeds that are naturally calm & pleasant & playful dogs.
But you should get one from the pound, save one from being killed. You know it's the right thing to do!

I would go all the way with these pets:
Small: pug, miniature schnauzer
Medium: Sheltie,boxer, English Springer Spaniel
Large: Labrador, Golden retriever, Coonhound
Extra Large: Kuvasz, Great Dane, Newfoundland, St.Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog
These are all great dogs! Companions and the like, the Kuvasz is very protective though.
