I was on Depakote ER for 8 months. I gained about 80 pounds during that time. Depakote ER slowed down my metabolism, made me hungry all the time, made me want to sleep all the time (I was sleeping about 20 hours a day... I'd fall asleep during class, my grades suffered horribly).

If you're on it or thinking about going on it, please don't. Talk to a therapist. Therapy helped me much more in the long run than taking medication did.

Depakote cannot cause tremors. Only antipsychotic drugs do that and depakote is not an antipsychotic, it is a miscellanous drug. Every medication out there has possible side effects. Talk to your doctor about the risks and any troublesome side effects you may experience while taking it. I've seen depakote to wonderful things helping people with seizures, migraine headaches and also helping as a mood stabilizer. Every body reacts to medications differently and if one medication does not work for you, your physician can prescribe another one that may help. Often it is a matter of trial and error to find the medication that works for you.

I have a friend who took it for about 10 years and her hands shake now like crazy. Her face even twitches. She no longer takes it. She has bipolar disorder.
