Note this is in reference to all kinds of batteries including mobiles and a major reason why it is better to donate phones rather than add to the landfills.

1. Improper handling of the heavy metal components will have a bad effect on the environment.

2, Some of the battery's components such as Beryllium affect the lungs and causes some life threatening diseases. Mercury (found to a degree) can attack the central nervous system and is harmful to teeth and gums.

3. Faulty batteries can be harmful to people when they explode or set on fire on their laps.

1. They use heavy metals and acids that build up in landfills.
2. They generate a lot of waste in the first place.
3. The mining operations to extract the heavy metals are often conducted in third world countries with very little oversight of the working conditions of the miners, who are overexposed to the metals (such as lead or mercury) causing cancers and many other health related issues in the future.

Hope this helps.
