No, they didn't forget. They just don't care. They're shameless. It's just a shame.......
-Those Christians claiming their religion was a non-issue in regards to the attrocities committed against Native Americans must not be aware of the principle of Manifest Destiny which was the main justification by white settlers to oust, harrass, and indeed slaughter the natives in the West.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifest_Destiny
Put simply, the principle of Manifest Destiny claimed Anglo Saxons were granted, by divine right, all of the Americas and whatever atrocities they committed against the natives were sanctioned by "God".

Only the uninformed and ignorant consider the United States a Christian nation.
First point, the United States didn't exist as a nation until after the Revolutionary War and writing of the Constitution. It doesn't matter what Columbus, the Pilgrims or the Puritans were.
Second, Christians, Deists, Unitarians, Unversalists, or Congregationalists, the Founding Fathers were above all religious liberals composed primarily of people who had fled England's religious intolerance.
Third, are we forgetting the First Amendment?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I must have missed the part where Congress declared the United States a Christian nation. Thomas Jefferson in his letter to the Danbury Baptists further emphasized this point (http://www.usconstitution.net/jeffwall.html) regarding what has become know as the Establishment Clause.
Fourth, anyone claiming that the laws of the United States are based on Christian principles of right and wrong hasn't read much. Similar principles are found in almost all of the worlds religions including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Budism, Confucianism and numerous minor religions, so exclusive claim to these ideas hardly rests with Christians.
Unlike Iraq (a Muslim nation), Israel (a Jewish state) and Britain (the Church of England), the United States hasn't now nor has it ever had an official state religion. The United States has never been a religious state. Many of our people may practice one form or other of Christianity, I still believe that Catholics are in the majority, but that doesn't make us a Christian state, even though I'm sure Jerry Falwell wishes it were so.

The Native Americans were not slaughtered by Christians. They were slaughtered by men. A true Christian and let me stress TRUE, would never have thought of doing the things done to the Native Americans. No, these were not Christians they were only men. The people who founded America were Christians. They founded this country on Christian beliefs and ideals. Those men were not the same men who killed the Native Americans.

Because the United States is a government that occupies a land. The native Americans were not a part of that government though they did occupy the land. United States was and to some degree is a Christian nation, quite often people confuse violence done in the name of a government or society with that of a religious role. Many of the native Americans who were slaughtered as you say were slaughtered by the Spanish who landed in Florida, and Mexico and such. You could hardly blame the United States for any of the indians who were killed by another government and then later we bought that land from that govt. (Louisiana Purchase) We did do some terrible things in our beginnings, but don't act add to that by making it seem like it was worse than it really was.

Don't be a Muslim and go back 500 years.
Yes the Christians have been brutal, get over it.
We have a native American teacher and that is what he told us.
They are politicians, teachers and preachers. Most Americans have Indian blood. The Choctaw nation knew a language that the Germans couldn't decipher and they could translate which helped win the war. Many war hero's who fought for this country in world war 2 was Indian descent. Go back far enough and everyone has a sordid past. You could he said say: My great great grandfather was killed by an Indian so therefore I hate Indians. For both sides to do that would be foolish.
Move on and get over it and make the most of what you are today. Never, Never carry a grudge more than a week.
He said that is an Indian philosophy because I am an Indian and I said it.

Before the white man came along, Native Americans were basically animist (the belief that all objects, whether alive or not, have a spirit). Some were forced to believe the Christian faith, and if they didn't, they were eliminated. Some Native Americans are Christians now (or some other religion), but a lot still practice animism.

This might be a little long-winded, but here goes. The Native Americans were't slaughtered by our founding fathers. They were forced to covert to their way. They took all of their heritage away from them. It wasn't allowed to be taught in schools.
The Native Americans worship the "Great Spirit". Isn't that another word for God? They are "Earth People", in that, they respect the earth and what the "Great Spirit" gave them.
Regardles of what you call God, Allah, Jehovah. We still all worship the same person.
Our founding fathers may have slaughtered the Natives spiritually, but not physically. That came from the white men thinking they were better than anyone else.

The Christians of these United States claim this is a Christian country. They yell the loudest, so it must be. Oh, forgot one other thing. The President of the United States is a 'born again', does not know what the Constitution is. He is the 'Decider'. Sorry native amercian, he decided WE are Christian. Ask any Muslim. Right now, native americans and democrats are all on a reservstion. Need to vote in this november election to make it right.

Yes yes yes. But back in the present, a majority of Americans are Christian, either a Christmas-Easter Christian, or the scary other kind of Christian.
Still, that doesn't make America a "Christian nation." It makes us, at most, a majority Christian nation, and according to American ideals, minorities have the same rights as the majority, so it doesn't matter what religion you are. Our laws should still apply to everyone equally, and not be lifted from anyone's holy book.

realistically, it is a christian nation today... just look at the population... i believe that about 75% of the population is christian.
however, i do understand your frustration. historically, this nation belonged to the natives (as it still should today yet "westerners" have taken it away) and their religions should be celebrated and embraced more.
i believe that it was in the da vinci code where i read.... history is made up of all of the winners... i bet that had the natives won the battles against the westerners, this country would be very very different. history tends to weed out the stories that represent the weak, exploited, and poor.
good to know that there are still people who are willing to do some research on their own to get a more well rounded idea of history

because the founding fathers took over the land and the declaration of independence and the constitution were written with christian values in mind. I know i don't agree with the way the native americans were slaughtered and all that stuff but most of the founding fathers came here for religious freedom
