We use what is called 'inductive reasoning' to work out future happenings. The sun rose today so I reason that it will rise tomorrow. I can't prove that it will. But, if I only expect what has happened today (or yesterday or the day before and so on) I will never be prepared for something new - the unexpected. As new things do happen, I need to be prepared for them, and, especially when things are changing fast, then I need to expect the unexpected otherwise not only will I be less ready to adapt, I may find the unexpected a threat rather than a challenge and be unable to cope.

To expect the unexpected is to prepare yourself for an occurence, the nature of which you are unable to predict.
You can generally brace yourself, putting yourself in a 'fight or flight' state so that you are able to react once this event occurs, whatever this event may be. You also treat objects and events around you with suspicion, not assuming them to be normal occurences.

You can expect something unexpected to happen, but you can't expect what it will be exactly.

yes if you generalise you can find a problem with comments like this.
the unexpected can be many things although when loosely defined as the "unexpected" there does seem to be a problem with the statement

A contradiction in terms is what you have there.
How can you expect the unexpected?

It's just a clever way to say keep your eyes and ears open 'cause you never know where it's coming from.
