Something is better than nothing, wearing a headgear is comparable to this....put a hard boiled egg into a glass of water, shake the glass back in forth as hard and fast as you can. Cracks on the shell right? Now do the same thing this time put a wash cloth around the egg. Cracks right? The headgear does give some protection from the punches but the main purpose of the headgear is to protect the boxer from getting cut in the gym. Good question thank you...........................................You guys and Girls that answer these questions that are asked by referring to some obscure article from the Internet about the subject at hand, cutting and pasting where the article can be found are missing the point. These people ask questions to get real feed back, they are intelligent enough to look up an answer for their question off of any computer but they want your story with your own original twist and experiences. Give it a break and write from your life's experiences.

Yes, wearing head gear will reduce the likelhood of concussion, as well as possibly reducing the likelyhood or severity of longer term effects on your brain. The headgear is made of a dense open cell foam that effectively reduces the speed (and therefore the force) of a punch before it makes full contact with your skull. I've listed some resources below to medical explainations of what causes concussion, knock out and how to prevent them (or recognize them and deal with them should you be so unfortunate as to have them happen!)
All the above being said, you really need to go to the local boxing gym and learn from an accredited coach. Not only will it be safer as you're practicing under professional supervision, you'll actually learn the sweet science of boxing rather than just throwing punches; there's a huge difference. Above and beyond that you'll have the chance to actually compete with other ameture boxers and get a good gauge of how good you actually are by working against a larger pool of competitors than just your friends. Be well.

you should be fine.
see a lot of people don't get the concept of sparring. they thing once you put on that gear its time to go hard.. WRONG.. when sparring with a 'partner' you're trying to perfect your skill and technique, not beat the brains out of the guy. 'partner'- helper, not opponent. you should go half strength/ or at least 75% strength.
make sure you guys use mouth guards just in case, you're still young and you don't want to accidentally loose any permanent teeth just sparring, which doesn't happen often but can.. better safe than sorry..
if you start getting headaches that last 1/2 or more, shadowy vision, dizziness, grogginess, etc. these may be signs that you're going too hard and need to see a doctor.
boxing tends to be a little more wearing on the brain than martial arts sparring because it consists of mainly repeated head shots.. so my advice is to take it easy while sparring, save the really strong stuff for the ring...
hope this helps

headgear does protect to an extent,it absorbs a little of the blow but your brain is still getting jared around in your skull so until the make some inside padding for you brain it is not gonna fully protect your nugget but it helps,,,also will prevent you from getting cuts for the most part

Yes it does protect your head to a point but not totally. It is protection much like a groin protector except you will be getting legally hit more often in the head than below the belt.
