With knowledge and facts comes wisdom. With wisdom and knowledge comes freedom and a natural rejection of the bloodlust , fear filled Christ Cult.
When man uses his inborn insight and reason he tends to reject lies when they are presented to him.
All Atheists have a duty to murder their (Christians) faith and help them to free their minds and reject fear. Our future and theirs depends on the destruction of religion, particularly the Christ Cult variety..

Perhaps it has more to do with the culture that we live in, than the faith that these people have walked away from. In the developed world, the church is not central to the lives of the majority. In many developing countries, it is an essential part of existence. It is an absolute social structure by which many people must exist. It assures their place in society...pretty hard to walk away from? In my neck of the woods, no one knows or cares any more what faith you carry in your heart, or if you even attend a church. It was only one short generation ago that I recall clearly how much it mattered if a person married into their own faith. I imagine that many things will change as far as faith goes, but until affluence and differing political climes sweep third world countries (not likely) things will remain static in those places.

Most of us were one thing or another before we became atheists. Me, I suspect I was a lifelong atheist before I realized what an atheist was. I was never inspired or touched by religious readings or tales, and I was always unimpressed by people's stories about how God did this or that. The I started learning about how the many claims by the religious had little to no basis in reality...the Noahcian Flood, for instance. I started asking questions and the answers I got from religionists kept getting thinner and thinner. I did more research into many other religions and found them all unsatisfactory. In the end, I realized that atheist was the most accurate description for what I was.

In America, that would probably be because the vast majority of Americans identify as Christians, and so would raise their kids Christian, too. A lot of American Pagans, Buddhists, and Muslims are ex-Christians, too. In another country, there might be another answer.

When they grew up they found the ability to think for themselves. It seems to me that most are so disgusted that they don't even want to consider other religious paths.
Does this phenomena exist with other religions? Are there a bunch of former Buddhists or Pagans who are now Atheists? It seems that something in Christianity drives people away from it more than other religions!

Christians have a way of describing their faith in such a way that it triggers an itch in the brain, one that cries out to be scratched with the statement: "THAT MAKES NO SENSE!" After so many encounters, its easy to feel allergic to Christianity.
And once you start questioning, it has a way of taking on a wondrous quality of discovery that is just too much fun to stop.
From my self-introduction:
"I majored in Religion in a Methodist college, spent 1 year in Methodist seminary. I then divorced the Methodists, refused to return the Baptists' calls, fled abuse from the Catholics, engaged in heavy petting with the Episcopalians & Unitarians, but fell in love with the Buddhists because with them, "no-God" is also a spiritual path."

Jefferson has a good point: “his [Jesus’] principles were departed from by those who professed to be his special servants, and perverted into an engine for enslaving mankind". I think atheism is rejecting an ego-projection, made-up image of God that we find in the bible and other major religions. Who wouldn't? The god is judgmental, kills people, sends people to eternal punishment, etc. The real god is hidden underneath all this garbage and is never ever experienced because of it.

Because there are so many Christians....
You forgot to mention that since the fall of communism in the east, hundred of thousands of people have converted to Christianity in what was the Soviet Union...Also, China is seeing a wave of Christianity being adopted by many of its citizens...
Christians do not have 'infidels'. So, if some religion doesn't want you in their church, come, join us and come have dinner at our church. We accept everyone. Jesus Christ died on the cross for everyone, including those who condemned Him to death.... Everyone is welcome.

They probably read the bible.
I am amazed by the sheer volume of people calling themselves Christian that are totally unfamiliar with the book. I know several people who lost their faith when they actually sat down, read the book, and just thought about the implications of it all.
