Why not "Go Postal" in reverse and surprise them in the sorting office whilst they are drinking tea on overtime opening our letters to look for credit cards with and waste them all in a hail of automatic gunfire whilst playing Wagner at max volume dressed Oberon

Well, I'm a rural route carrier and there are packages that won't fit in my vehicle. You, therefore, will need to go pick them up at the post office. Also, if you don't open your door when we knock, you will get a notice. If you are getting these notices when you're at home and you know you're getting them when you're at home then why don't you open the door and ask your carrier why you got the notice instead of the package? That should resolve your problem. Honestly, the only person who can answer that question for you is the mail carrier, not a bunch of people on yahoo answers.
Also, anybody slapping me better be damn motivated to fight for their life.
Secondly, to the woman complaining about her mail arriving late: maybe it was a new trainee. People don't just decide to become mail carriers one day and WHAM! they know how to do it. It takes time. Not only that but your mail carrier is also carrying MANY other peoples' packages, maybe insured and that need signed for and that takes time to get done. Then there are the certified letters that all need signatures and slips filled out. We have no control over how many of those we get. Mondays are typically harder, 2 days of mail buildup. Some days require more time because EVERYONE on the route gets mail. Think: pizza hut fliers, missing children cards.
Sometimes, we get flat tires or a radiator hose blows or something even WORSE and then we either need to get it fixed and finish our route or hope there is an alternate vehicle to use.
Sometimes the mail arrives at the post office late. We don't control the delivery drivers, we are at their mercy and they face their own issues from time to time. Sometimes one post office will accidentally get another post office's mail. Rarely, but it happens.
Please remember, you are not the only person on the route but even if you're a hater we'll still give you our best effort.
Step in my shoes, learn my job, let me run your butt ragged and then come see me about these issues.

It could be that the parcel was too bulky or heavy for them to lug round with them on their rounds and the parcel was never actually in the possession of the delivery person and they just wanted you to pick it up yourself.
When you do go to collect it - ask if you are entitled to a free red elastic band because you would generally have one dropped on your doorstep by the postman at least once a week

It is very expensive for the postal service to deliver the mail. Packing objects in their vehicle cause more weight and uses more gas.
Many times, you are not home.
So they get into the habit of filling out a slip to let you know you have a parcel so that it doesn't chew up their time when you are not home or the gas to take it from the post office to your home and you not be there to deliver it and then back to the post office.
Besides, think of their poor backs.
I am grateful they told me I have package to pick up.

Complain to the postmaster.
I had this mail lady who always got our mail mixed up with five other neighbors (went on for almost a year).
Sometimes neighbors had mail missing (no checks just bills-but still). We concluded that she was failing to deliver some of our mail (at least that is what we were hoping)....Because we all would make our trips to deliver the mail to the right houses.
The last straw was when some sensitive mail was open by mistake by one of my neighbor's kids (they felt really bad).
We all went down to the post office as a group to complain. That person no longer is our mail lady. Also, I think she quit. Good....hate to see her screw up some other part of town.

Before you slap anyone. Consider this a social life, when you have to get up at 3am in the morning, come rain, shine sleet or snow. They are assaulted by dogs, spiders webs and in your case the customer. They ring the bell or knock the door, and you are in the shower, or drying your hair, (well not in your case). Give them a break, or take a walk in their shoes, I dare you.

Yes, complain. They are meant to give a good, hard knock on the door before issuing a card.
But remember, they are most likely delivering early(ish) and It's not the postman's fault if you can't be ar$ed gettimg out of bed!...........x

They are postmen - not mind readers, and generally they do not carry the packages with them - they know 90% of the people will not be at home!
