I know I just want to see if YOU know. I noticed that a lot of ppl confuse the two and it really makes a difference when you ask for hair advice.

A perm is used to make your hair curly, while on the other hand, a relaxer is used to make your hair straight.
You are so right; many people do confuse the two; laziness, I guess.

A perm is used to create waves or curls in one's hair by breaking down the natural bonds in the hair with perm solution. The neutralizing solution hardens the bonds of the hair to the size of the rods on which the hair has been wrapped.
A perm may also be used to straighten hair. The perm solution is applied and breaks down the bonds of the curly hair while the hair is combed straight. Then the neutralizing solution hardens those bonds again with the hair combed straight.
Relaxer is used to do just as the name suggests....relax the curl in a curly head of hair.

"Perm" is short for "permanent wave". A chemical that softens the outer layer of the hair is applied, then the hair is wound around rods or rollers. Depending on the size of the rollers the result may either be curlier or straighter hair. After the hair has set on the rollers for a while, a neutralizing solution is used to stop the process. Perming damages hair, and it takes a while for the cuticle (outer layer) to recover, so be careful with freshly permed hair. (Don't use dyes, go swimming in chlorinated water, etc., for a few days after wards.)
A hair relaxer is almost the same thing but it just straighten the hair chemically.

For women of color it's they have the same meaning. Perm is a relaxer which relaxes the curl pattern of your hair. For other races perms gives their hair curls.

They are opposites of each other. Perm makes your hair more curly, a relaxer makes it less curly.

A relaxer is just a chemical that makes your hair settle and straighten out.
