I'll back both answers, but you need to start with the dimensions of the picnic table and the design. You also need to determine the type of materials. Pressure treated lumber is not a good choice for surfaces that will have food on them. This means either Cedar, Redwood, Teak, or engineered lumber (plastic). Other choices also exist. Will you use benches or separate seating. Separate seating will be more money, but more flexability. Now it is your turn to put in some effort.

mahogany is more easier to get hold off than walnut. my Gran had an antique walnut bedroom suite. chest of drawers, dresser, wardrobe+ tallboy. she's had it years+ its still beautiful.

My son buys wood from around the world. He designs, carves, and builds custom furniture. He says mahongany would cost more. There are few if any mahongany plantations here in the USA... most are in South America and Asia.
