golf a sport?

why do people consider golf a sport? i think if a old man can walk around in dress pants and not get hurt it should not be a sport. if you say yes then do you consider darts a sport?

By pure definition they both are. Sport is defined by Webster as : Physical activity engaged in for pleasure."

If you look at Olympic events, you will find activities ranging from Basketball, to Hockey, to Boxing, to Swimming, to Running, to Decathlons, to non-athletic, simple activities like Curling, and Archery. They ALL take a specific skill to do. Some sports are also considered hobbies, but they are still a sport. Hunting,and Fishing, would be another example of an activity as both a sport, and hobby. I think to be a sport, you must engage in some type of competition with an opponent.

In my own personal opinion, it " ain't a sport,... if it can't kill you!"

I used to think that way about golf until I played it. I've played many sports in my life and golf is by far the hardest and most challenging. The slow pace looks very deceiving because the game is very demanding physically and mentally... especially mentally. To me, anything that involves skill (as opposed to just luck) in a game (where somebody wins and loses) is a sport. So yes, darts is a sport. In contrast, scuba diving is not a sport (because nobody wins). Don't belittle golf because I bet you can't play it even if you tried hard. And when I mean play it---not just putting the ball in the hole, I mean, playing it like it should be played, putting the hole in 4 strokes in a par 4, 3 strokes in a par 3, and so on.

Golf is more than a sport. It's not only a physical test, it's also a mental test. Each round could last 4-5 hours. It takes physical strenght and conditioning to hit balls 300+ yards long (note 3x longer than hitting a baseball for home runs), walk more than 4 miles, and a mental game to play the course and the elements.

yes and yes you keep score, there is a level of skill involed in them both, these athletes train for their events, there is a fan base. No offense but when you golf you probably ride in a cart for 18 or walk 9 holes, or ride in a cart for nine holes. My guess is that you get frustrated easy, play poorly and blame your suckiness at golf on a stupid question like is golf a sport. Just because every time you golf, you get beat, don't question golfers as athletes. Tiger Woods is in much better shape than you have ever or will be in. So take it easy on golfers and have another beer.

I would say golf is a sport as there is more to it than old men walking arouned. Like whacking a very small ball into a very small hole at varing long distances away it might souned easy but its very hard and is quite physical especially when driving. Darts is also hard, but i could understand people calling that a game rather than a sport.
