and for the last 6 months, it has been fine being home alone and not in his cage. All of a sudden for the last 2 weeks, everytime they leave the house, it acts out. It chews on things ruining things in the house. Just today, it got into her expensive fish food and ate it all. Is there a reason for it acting out? Lack of attention? or is it just lonley? And why is it just now acting this way within the last 2 weeks but it was fine before? Any suggestions? Did this happen to you?

I believe it has separation anxiety as well and the best thing to do is to put it back in it's grate and teach him how to behave in it's own space again and then slowly start to introduce it to more area little by little. It will take a long time and effort but it will work.

Be warned the dog may try to get out of the grate and hurt itself doing it so be careful when retraining it.

If that doesn't work the next step is leaving the dog for shorter time periods and gradually making it longer, this takes forever but that will show the dog that even though you leave you always come back. Another trick is to never say good-bye to your dog when you leave and try to leave though different doors to confuse the dog in thinking your not really leaving. One more thing, the dogs pays attention on the order that you do things before you leave the house, like picking up your keys last or locking the door or warming the car up. Mix it up a bit so you don't alert the dog.

It could be alot of resons but most likely it misses her. Put it in the cage eveytime it happens and slowly start letting it out for short perods. What we did our dog is really our daughters so he has a teddy bear with her shirt on it so he can smell her and it works also see if she has an answering machine to where it can her when she calls and call the dog to say hi.

The only reason is the dog doesnt appreciate being alone if it had some bones and toys around for it to play with maybe even another dog it wouldnt have time to do that and it feels its ok because your gone it it wants to be with you and when you leave he gets lonely and bored that means he needs somebody else to play with he is way to close to his owner if he does this when they are gone he doesnt appreciate being alone it means he is very bored so he thinks chewing things is enertaining for him.

yes, the dog has seperation anxiety. It should be crated when left alone. Also make sure you give the dog a busy toy, like a kong filled with peanut butter or a hollow bone filled with something. this will keep the dog occupied and it will hopefully not feel so anxious.

well often when animals act like that is when they know that the owners are not there and they do what they feel and from it acting so different because it might just be getting use to his new family
