Walking on the beach in the sand for long distances; walking around the neighborhood (up and down hills – most of my walking is UPHILL) and hiking. It took a while, but I am finally starting to see some weight drop. My question is this: Why is that every time I walk, my calves burn? I mean, they burn BADLY.. walking is very painful on them. Not just walking from my car to the store or anything, but when I’m exercise-walking. I tried switching up my shoes, but it didn’t make a difference. I pay a lot of attention to that way I am walking, as well – I walk heel to toe. WHY Do my calves hurt soooooooooooooooo bad ALLLLLLLLL the time?

But my thighs and buns don't burn at all. In fact, I don't even feel anything the next day... but TRUST ME when I say that the walking I do is very intense.

That's because it's a good work out.

Look at your calves, look at those muscles!

Work it!

Walking on the sand is hard on the body. It is not flat. 1 to 5 miles on a flat surface would be better. I would see a Doctor about the burning in your calves. I had to be in better health before I could walk long distances. My weight had affected my health. As I lost weight I could walk better without the pain. This was my experience. It may not be the same for you. I think my legs were hurting because of the pressure... high blood pressure. After I lost 28 lbs. and changed my eating habits, my blood pressure went down to normal and the aches and pains were less. Hope this helps some.

You mentioned your walks on the sand and up hill these are harder on your legs in general and more demanding of the muscles used in walking witch dose include the caves i would recommend stretching before and after walks and drinking plenty of water to be able to flush the toxins from working out.. that are stored in the muscles

you calf muscle is the heart of your legs helping push blood back up to the heart so long as you stretch and keep hydrated you should be fine. The burning is micro tears in the muscle which your body will repair with more muscle tissue hence muscle growth

As the saying goes no pain no gain is true here

Your muscles are working a lot. It's hard on them to walk in the sand and go up the hills. I don't think it's abnormal for your calves to burn. Just make sure to stretch before and after. No need to do it for a long time. 5 min before and after is enough.

Your using the calf muscle to much, try walking on a straight road instead of the beach, and don't climb hills, your calf muscle is only going to get bigger. Walk a straight road at a speed that makes you start to break a sweat, thats when you know your burning fat, don't go any faster then that because you'll only burn energy and not fat, if you go to slow then it's not doing anything. Walk an hour everyday and drink alot of water too, at least 100 oz a day..that helps flush alot of fat from your body.

Stretch your calves....stand on a step with your heels over the step and drop them down to get a real calf stretch. Stretch before you go and when you come back in. Stretch for at least 20 seconds per stretch and do 5 or 10 of them....hope it helps

if most of your walking is uphill you need to give your calves time to heel so you should only walk the hills a couple times a week untill you build up your calf muscles because what you are doin is every time you go up a hill you are actually tearing the calf muscles and if you dont put a few days in between uphill walks you are keeping them torn and they need time to heal in order for them to grow stronger.you build muscles by tearing and letting heal and repeating a couple days later..muscles wont grow if you keep them torn.

I have this problem too and found that three things make it worse or come on. 1. Eating prior to exercise. Assume this is because blood flow is diverted to stomach to digest food rather than to calf muscles.
2. Walking too fast too quickly. Try to ease your calf muscles into it, almost like warming up.
3. Similar sort of thing to warming up, but found if it's very cold weather it can make it worse.

Try stretching before you walk. The beach is great to walk on because the surface is not hard. You might be getting shin splints- try wrapping them in an ace band aide and see if that helps.

are you stretching them properly? walk up to a side walk where it meets the road and place your heel on the inside corner where it meets and make sure your toes are resting on the sidewalk pointing up towards the sky and move your body closer foreward, slowly...stretch the calve muscle GOOD after your walk.
