If you're going to pay off your credit card but still keep it open, then your next statement will show the payoff. Most company's report to the credit bureaus on a monthly basis, so your credit report will be updated within 1-2 months. If you're paying off your credit card and closing it, then I would definitely ask for a letter that you requested the account to be closed and that it has a zero balance. Most credit card companies will send the letter when you close an account, but I'd ask just to make sure.

Any reputable credit card company will update credit reports on a regular basis. Your next billing statement will show a zero balance and would be proof of pay off. Good luck.

MiMi, getting a letter isn't a standard practice for unsecured credit cards because it's unsecured (you don't put down any collatoral). Once you pay it off it'll show a $0 balance and that will be reflected in your credit report. They likely will not send you a statement in writing because it's not necessary.

You should ask them for something in writing in regards to your credit report. If they say no, you can always do an inquiry through the credit bureau to get updated.

It is not the legal responsibility of the collection agency to "clear you" with the credit bureau, you must maintain entries in your credit reports by contacting each one, IF the collection agency in question will not. Regardless, you will still eventually have to pay the debt. Trust me, it will haunt you :)

Just pay it off. It will reflect on your credit when you do. You can't force them to do anything.
