That IS VERY important and makes a poem an inappropriate gift. Closest thing I can even imagine is a book at Christmas or something. Proust or someone NOT romantic!!
Good luck - but start looking elsewhere. By the time Christmas rolls around, hopefully you'll be focussing on another YOUNG lady who is AVAILABLE!!
You'd put the Professor in a very uncomfortable position. If you care for her you don't want to do that. If she's a professional - she'd have to return it to you, unless it's a sno-globe of the Eiffel Tower of something.

It might make her a bit uncomfortable! Is she leaving soon? Anyway, if you still want to give her a poem, you should be more specific and ask the type of poem you want (what it would be about, which period, etc.)

She might think it's creepy if you are male, or lesbian. Poetry is a personal gift, make sure your relationship is on that friendly a level before giving it.

That said, Rimbaud changed poetry, a small book of his verse might suffice.
