Well it helps to become a good photographer before you think of becoming professional, although I've come across a few professionals who aren't good photographers.

Real professionals regard their cameras simply as tools, so they make the decision based on the reliability of the equipment (including whether it is weather-proof, and can be fixed quickly if it breaks - which even the best cameras do) and the range and quality of lenses and accessories available. They are less influenced by price, since it is a business expense for them.

People who want to look like professionals, or simply want to get the best pictures, usually buy the so-called 'pro-sumer' SLRs or fixed zoom cameras, and are highly and brand-conscious, but sometimes are misled by these considerations. For example the recently released Sony Alpha 100 is currently the best value in this market, but doesn't have the image of say the equivalent Canon or Nikon models (neither of which have built-in image stabilization, by the way).

Unfortunately, exactly the opposite applies to travelling - here avoiding weight and size is everything. If you know what you are doing, compact cameras with manual controls are best (like the Canon S80 or Panasonic LX1/2), but if you don't really know much about photography a fully automatic ultra compact is the way to go (look at Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Nikon and Casio..)

There are a host of good websites that offer guidance on equipment and technique - a good starting point is www.dpreview.com, which includes a list of links and some very active discussion forums along with the best camera tests in the business. Luminous Landscape is more about technique..

Oddly enough- becoming a good photographer has little to do with the camera you select. It really is the guy behind the lens, and not the camera that creates art.

For travelling- go with one of the many fine digital compacts.
For professional use: go with one of the many fine DSLRs.

I could recommend a few- but it sounds like you still need to wrap your arms around what you want to do with your photography passion.

you juz need the right equipment and the right knowledge. for travelling and professional uses, u might need something like a pro-sumer DSLR at least. pair it with a couple of lenses and you should be ready to go. try along the line of nikon d70s, nikon d50, nikon d80 (when it is available), canon 350d, canon 20D or canon 30D. you would not go terribly wrong with any of these. also, get some decent zoom lenses to accompany the body, ones that have weight but not too heavy for your own good. somewhere along the line of 17-70 and 70-200 should be enough for now.

after that, get some books that teaches you how to take good pictures and learn from them.

pretty much everything is digital now so if you're willing to spend a little extra you can get a nice digital SLR for around $1000-$1600, you can go all the way up to like $8999 for just the body (no lens) but for a beginer (and even most pro/am photographers) it's a bit much to upgrade that much.
