It is true that police busting drunk drivers does not prevent the problem at the source, they only bust a small % each night? Why do bar/restaurant owners have to provide adequate parking? It is legal to drive up but not to drive away. Why can't a partnership be created to actually prevent patrons from driving away after consuming alcohol?

okay..coming from a person who has had a DUI....it is always, and i mean ALWAYS the responsibility of the drinker to get home without being drunk or even slightly intoxicated. they have buses, taxis, carpools and even people to come pick you up (that's if you even have friends) it's up to the drinker to provide themselves with an alternate way home. if a taxi costs too much, then you can't afford to drink anyway.

here is one idea. start a fund with MADD or similar organization to tax drunk drivers an additional fine when they get caught to fund a sort of public shuttle service or vouchers for a taxi service that a bar owner can pass out. raise prices for alcohol inside the bars. this should only be a courtesy and not a mandatory service.

any which way, it is still up to the drinker to drink responsibly.

Insurance is one reason. I own a bar and we've talked about this before as a possibility. What insurance agent would touch a policy covering us driving a van or bus full of intoxicated passengers... none.
So we enlist the services of our local cab companies to sit outside our doors for just such an occasion.
What it comes down to is it is up to the customers to drink responsibly. We can only slow them down or cut them off completely when they've hit or approaching that point. We cannot take their keys away from them and we cannot physically prevent them from getting into their car and driving off. All we can do is try to reason with them and call the cops if they do drive away. We have to do this... otherwise, if they have a wreck and Heaven forbid somebody gets killed ,we can be held liable.
The best solution is don't get drunk when you go out. If you plan to get that way then bring a designated driver. Or consider one of these companies that drives you and your car home in the same trip.

Bar owners would go out of business if they only served a maximum of 1 to 2 drinks to each customer. Any more than 2 would give an average person enough alcohol in their blood to make it illegal for them to drive. A better idea would be to educate drinkers that it's safer and much more cheaper to drink at home. Hell, you can buy a whole six pack for what a bar charges for just one drink. Why throw money away?

This might work if there were no private parties that people drive away from drunk. There's a lot more alcohol consumed than just in the bars.

The key is: TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF!!!

It's not a bar owner's job to keep you from getting drunk and driving away. You're actually not supposed to get drunk at bars...it's illegal. Ideally, you're supposed to drive to a bar, have a drink or two (nothing to put you over the limit), hang out for a few, and then leave.

Forcing bars to provide shuttles is only going to put prohibitive costs on the bars, and force some of them to shut down, putting people out of jobs.

They already have rides for drunk people: they are called friends and cabs.

I've had a brother and a sister killed (murdered) by drunk drivers, two separate accidents, about 30 years apart so i'm for anything that works to keep drunks off the roads, if you are drunk and driving you should have NO rights.

Why dont we spend more taxpayers money on programs that dont work. Its called personal responsibiltiy.Thats like busting the auto dealership for selling a car that has manufacturers defects. Its up to the drunk to stop the drinking and since thats not going to happen how about taking away the license on the first offense.Just like smoking, everyone wants to go after tobacco..,i smoke since 13 no one forced me and I knew they would kill me....People,government are taking soft drinks and fatty snacks out of school because kids are too lazy and fat to exercise.Personal responsibility.Lets get more government to protect us against ourselves.

With gas at $3.45 per gallon I wouldn't expect many bars to pony up the money.

After your party travelers supply you the keys, enable them to appreciate that the only way they are able to retrieve their keys is on condition that they are able to assert a tongue-tornado without getting tongue-twisted. Use an common one. in the event that they're tipsy, have confidence me, they gets tongue-twisted.
