Here is the prophecy:
Psa 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, [for] the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell [among them].
Here is it's fulfillment:
Mat 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Here is the explanation:
Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Eph 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Conclusion: Jesus descended into hell (the grave) and brought forth all of those who had died looking forward to the promise of His coming.

I can't tell you anything about that being true or not, but I can give you an advice: would you really feel good to believe what is written in the Bible, knowing that it may be just a representation of some person's opinion on what should be included and what should not be included? Do you really want to believe that the words written in the Bible are God's words, knowing that the bible has been rewritten tons of times, each time in a new version with different passages left out and changed? Certainly the Bible contains the word of God, but it has been warped and twisted by the humans who wrote and rewrote it.
If you are looking for the right path, read Al-Qur'an. It has not been messed with by humans and is still in it's original form. That's why it is not allowed to write a translation of Al-Qur'an without the original Arabic text accompanying it, in order to ensure that there are no different versions of Al-Qur'an circulating.

Since there is no such place as "Hell", obviously Jesus could not have gone there. "Hell" is simply a word representing the concept of being absent from the presence of God. If we make the final choice to be apart from God, he grants us that wish. This means our personality (person-ness, the quality of being an individual person) is annihilated. We no longer exist. God is not so cruel as to send someone to a burning pit of fire for all eternity.
There are lots of books labeled as apocrypha which did not make it into "canon". Canon refers to the authoritative list of books accepted as Holy Scripture. This was decided by a council of men. Men make mistakes. Many people read these non-canonical books and believe them to be true. The Gospel of Thomas is a popular one.
Besides the OT, the NT and the other non-canonical books, there are many other vehicles which can carry you to God. Jesus did indeed say he was the way, the truth and the light, but just because there is only one road doesn't mean there aren't many different types of cars driving on it. Seek truth wherever you can find it. God gave you a mind, the Spirit of Truth and even a piece of God himself within you to help guide you.

Christians believe the word of God, and nowhere in the word of God does it state what your boyfriend has said. Before Jesus died for our sins on the cross, people repented by sacrificing animals to the Lord. Jesus took in all of the pain so that we would have a clean slate to start over with, and to keep away the wrath of God, which comes from the sins all people commit. If you want more information, read the Bible. All the answeres are in their!

The basic concept is that at the time Jesus died for our sins and redeemed us that we might enter eternal life with him, people were in a place called Sheol (the place of the dead). Different parts of scripture establish this concept. For example: Psalm 30:4... "Lord, you brought me up from Sheol; you kept me from going down to the pit." The pit would signify the final death or eternal damnation. In Ephesians 4:7-10 it specifically mentions Christ as the one who descended. "But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore, it says: 'He ascended on high and took prisoners captive, he gave gifts to men.' What does 'he ascended' mean except that he also descended into the lower regions of the earth? The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things."

Jesus did go down to hell and lead all those who were followers of the Law held captive until their sin could be covered by the true sacrifice His own blood, instead of that of sheep and cattle. He lead them into the Father's Kingdom:
Ephesians 4:8
Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men

Talk about jumping in the deep end, Annie
'The Catechism of the Catholic Church' (ISBN 1-85390-241-1) cites two versions of the Creed (pages 47-48).
These creeds are statements of Faith agreed by the early Christian Church - way before the Protestant Reformation - so they form part of our universal Christian heritage; although scholars will debate the precise content of both. However, they are:
Firstly) The Apostle’s Creed - the Apostles own statement of Faith (their binding understanding, of Jesus Christ and of creation);
Secondly) The Nicene Creed which stems from the first two ecumenical Councils of the Church in AD 325 and 381 - a more theologically developed and prosaic statement of faith.
The line to which you refer occurs in the Apostle's Creed, the earlier and more simplistic statement of Faith it reads as follows:
THE APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit ,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
You see people were trying to rationalise their faith in-so-far-as one can rationalise a mystery. Belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ implies that he was an aspect of a God which was greater still - a God the Father so to speak. And that the life within him and relationship between Him and the Father was made through an mystical third aspect - the Holy Spirit (almost the breath of God if you will). Why the Virgin birth? Because Jesus himself insisted that he was not of mortal origin. The Virgin acts as the host for the Son of God to come into the world, having conceived miraculously through the Holy Spirit of God.
(Mega leaps but if Jesus Christ is to be comprehended for what he claims to be then we must make them...but Faith is a journey of incremental acceptances - so go with the flow)
‘As for descending to the dead’, or into hell. He is God of the living and of the dead. We will all die one day and we believe that new life will come to us through our Saviour Jesus Christ....
Actually I find the prayer to the Holy Souls about the most powerful prayer I know. Say the Creed, and Our father and Hail Mary and then these lines:
'O Holy Souls draw the power of God's love into my soul to reveal Jesus crucified in me here in this life rather than here after in heaven',
(followed by)
'Crucified Lord Jesus have mercy on the souls in purgatory'
(Repeated five times then back to the 'O Holy Souls' introduction and repeat the whole exercise five times; concluding with)
'Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.'
This prayer has an amazing effect. It slowly dissolves the ego and liberates true self awareness and a readiness to deal with ones 'issues'. ....gripes, hang-ups, excuses, or plain old delusions. But one should of course never be liberated from ones delusions to soon; reality can be like taking a dip in the Artic - to far beyond refreshing to be fun. Anyway the Holy Souls are gentle lights trying to make it the last leg of the journey to Heaven and are well worth relating to in terms of your daily struggle to be fully human and fully alive. They do tend to pay back very promptly in terms of new awareness.
That’s me finished for the night………..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

We come to the factor that we could continually say Jesus got here and replaced into born under the regulation, and replaced into the only human that ever saved the regulation. in case you could keep the regulation and not fail in one factor then you certainly can get to heaven that way.. One desires to stick to the religion that Jesus customary. He customary a clean covenant, (new testomony) so as that we would desire to be saved, via fact the old one wasn't working, with the aim to communicate. guy could no longer keep the commandments, so rather NO you won't be able to be saved that way considering which you won't be able to keep the entire regulation. to declare which you stick to the religion that Jesus and the Apostles did is misguided. The Apostles replaced in mid existence and preached the Gospel of the loss of life and resurrection of Jesus. in case you stick to the religion of the Apostles, then you certainly would be saved as they have been. yet Jesus did no longer would desire to be saved from his sins as HE did no longer SIN. So besides stick to the Apostles doctrine, that's the religion that Jesus customary and commanded them to stick to. stick to what Jesus commanded, that's what the Apostles did. the entire term faith does not slot in Christianity. Christians stick to Jesus and faith has a tendency to be customs and traditions that attempt to realize God.

He went into Hell long enough after he was crucified to preach to the souls there that the victory was won! I don't recall if any that were there at that time were saved or not, but i doubt it since Hell was a place designed for sin.
