The Red ribbons are for Aids awareness. The purple ribbons are for "Fight the Fear" having to do with 9/11.

I'm pretty sure its for drinking/driving. I was given a purple ribbon by a lady who came to my school and spoke about her sister who got killed in a drinking accident. She may have been speaking at the school you saw the ribbons at.
But now it seems there are lots of things it could stand for... could be any, too.

"Fellowship of the Earth" it is a symbolization of freedom to religion. Please visit this site that I looked it up on. http://www.fote.org/ribbon.htm By the way, great question, I've never seen the purple ribbon, so it made me interested to find out what you were asking. Thanks!
By the way, PINK IS FOR CANCER. Breast cancer.
