Actually it is very difficult to "handle" anyone that has psychiatric issues. Bipolar is probably one of the most difficult ones over which to maintain control. It is important to know the signs that your spouse is becoming manic...is she/he talking really fast and talking a lot? Is she/he feeling euphoric..thinking ahe/he is on top of the world and it lasts for days? is she/he having difficulty sleeping? or has he sunk intothe pits of despair? Is it difficult for him/her to motivate themselves to get out of bed. ? Those are some of the signs that your spouse might be havingproblems. Every personwith Bipolar disorder is different. What might work for some may not work for any one else. Encourage thinking through an issue before acting upon it. Encourgae getting involved in a support group...it will helpthem feel less alone

I included web pages that will give you a lot more information. If you are not involved in a group, I would strongly encourage you finding a support group for your self that will help you in your relationship with your spouse NAMI is a great place to start.

As a spouse, I think the best way for you to help a bipolar patient is to learn all you can about their disease. It also will help their doctors so much if you keep a journal of how you see their moods. Sometimes the person can't be objective about their symptoms, you can. This feed back is the most accurate way for mental health providers to effectively treat and medicate your loved one. Be proactive about medications. DON'T GIVE UP!
