Crucifixtion is one of the most brutal ways to die ever contrived by the mind of man. It was meant to torture a man to death with pain, dehydration, asphyxiation, collapsed arteries and veins from loss of blood and ultimately shock and organ failure. The very word "crucifixtion" comes from a Latin word "crucifare" meaning "to torture"! He couldn't make the pain more bearable because though he was God manifest in the flesh, He didn't want to offer the assumption that was he was doing for us was easy! Remember when he was in the Garden of Gethsemane and he prayed, "Father, let this cup pass from Me"? It was because the human side of his nature was AFRAID to die, but he had to put it behind Him and go through with it. It helped us truly understand the depth of His passion for us.

Well the nails for the hands go throught the carpal area of the condemned's wrist... and there is a major nerve there.. so it was excrutiating to say the least...

Then through the top of the feet... and you once they had the cross up, the condemned would have to support their weight by using their feet to push up... and then when their legs gave out they would have to use their arms.. but they would slowly sag, causing the rib cage to compress thereby suffocating...

Then there was the additional torture when they "tested" you to see if you were dead by stabbing you with a spear...

Many didn't survive the nailing to the cross, or even the torture pre crucification...

then there was the crucifiction upside down..

Romans were extremly vicious with their methods of execution.

Jesus used his abilities of Faith, Hope and Love to conquer the pain in *my* opinion.
He had faith that the Father (God) had a plan for him, Hope that he would be able to accomplish the task laid before him and Love for us.. He was willing to Die for us.. so that we wouldn't suffer lost forever...

If you mean why didn't he save himself?

*I* think he didn't because he obeyed God's request of him... he was humble, serving, unselfish...

Hugs

He suffered hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, and searing pain as tissue was torn from His lacerated back from His movement up and down against the rough timbers of the cross. Then another agony began: a deep crushing pain in the chest as the pericardium, the sac surrounding the heart, slowly filled with serum and began to compress the heart.

excrutiating.....watch the passion of the christ, that is one intense movie that goes into detail what he went thru.

I think since jesus was supposed to be dying for our sins he wasnt allowed to use any "powers" to make it more bearable. The whole reason he suffered was to absolve you, so he had to experience that fully.

(I am an atheist, btw)

I've heard that crucifixion is supposed to be one of the most painful deaths.
No, I don't think so, he gave His mortal life for us. He was living as a mortal and to endure our hardships as well, to save our souls. (my opinion)

Because God was his power and God wouldn't allieviate his pain, but, it does say he showed him what to expect (the agony in the garden where Jesus begs him to remove the cup from his hand).
