Walking and weight training. You don't have to do that much. Walk at least until you sweat 3-4 times a week, and lift light weights and high reps (nothing major). Cardio exercises like walking burn calories during the exercise, but only weight training will really boost your metabolism because it burns calories even when you're not doing it. Push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, and pull-ups count.
Also you don't have to go on a killer diet. Control your portion sizes, and eat everything in moderation. Any extreme method is bad news. Do what makes sense.

Eat healthily and in moderation. Don't take out your favorite foods--keep them in moderation however. Do you really need a few cups of ice cream when a half of cup will do?
Also, find an activity that you really enjoy. Waking? Swimming? Golfing? Strive to only become better at that--walk faster, swim hard, golf longer...whatever it is, set your goal at a reastic range.
Throw away your scale--while it's important to concentrate on weight, also pay attention to your pant size. That can be more important than scale. Would you rather weigh 120 pounds or fit into a size 10 at the size of 160 pounds?
Get a support group--friends, strangers--it doesn't matter. Be honest with yourself first and foremost, and if it helps you to go to a group setting, try Weight Watchers. Be supportive of yourself and don't be too hard. We all slip. It just takes getting on the right track.
Depend on yourself and not drugs. The "cure" for obesity isn't in a pill. It's in your heart and how hard you work.

Walking, jogging, swimming, biking, hiking... the key to success is too do it religiously and not for 5 hours straight, but little-by-little.
Good luck! (go outdoors, the fresh air is good for you, not just lifting weights and bench pressing in some dingy gym.) ^_^
