It's psychological....this is what I learned ...actually this is what was hammered into our heads as students of "Gymnastikschule Dortmund, Germany"....Never inhale consciously! Exhale only consciously. By inhaling consciously, you will disturb the natural flow of your breathing. The moment you start doing anything physical that challenges your stamina...breathe like this: exhale twice ...then let inhalation come naturally as a consequence to the thorough exhalation. So, the rhythm is: exhale 2x through mouth (form small o with your lips)...inhale 1x through nose....this will prevent shallow breaths all the way through training and games. Try it right now...notice how you automatically inhale with your abdomen.
Never inhale consciously for more than twice before diving for example....it can lead to hyperventilation.

Concentration is key. Keep aware of HOW you are breathing. Fill the top of your body with air when you breathe.
