I forgot that my friend Magda is a Jew. I had her over for dinner, and I served her a dish that included bits of ham. To make matters worse, I made the gravy with pan drippings and milk. I know I violated her strict dietary laws.....

You didn't violate anything. It was her choice to eat what you served or ask for something else. At most, you were forgetful or insensitive (all depends on how badly you wish to beat yourself up).
