For virus protection, it's clearly Symantec/Norton.
For Spyware, I'd say it's a combination of Spybot - Search & Destroy and MS Windows Defender. The good news is both of these are free.

I find that the System Restore button works very well. :D All the virus fighter softwares never worked for me, because everytime I got a virus, it was always those really nasty ones they can't get rid of. I use the System Restore in my computer, place the date before I obtained the virus, and boom, it's gone. It's like going back in time and correcting your mistakes, except on your computer. Now wouldn't we all want a restore button in life?

I'm all in with the McAfee Suite (firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware) It updates daily and is very good at keeping track of my system activity. If I click on something bad...it knows immediately and will prompt me for instructions.
***Keep in mind that most viruses are spread through spam emails or through downloading files with "exe" extentions. So, never open email from someone you don't trust, and never strat "clicking around" for "free" porn. You'll be fine.

Symantec antivirus is the best antivirus around including Mcafee antivirus. For spyware, the best free software is Ad-aware. You can find these software at download.com

I think Noton is the best as for a one that for a price. AVG is wonderful as a free version. If you are only worried about spyware I would recommend adaware. It's free to download. You can find these on ww.cnet.com under downloads.
Good Luck

F-secure. They have rootkit removal tools that symantec and McAfee will overlook or not remove. However, safe browsing habits help ensure a relatively clean computer without the need to pour money into a subscription.
