I have always wondered why the heart has been chosen (probably by our ancestors) to be the symbol of love. The heart scientifically pumps the blood all around our body and has nothing at all in relation to emotions and the "thinking"! All these feelings are done by the brain (or so the scientists say)! Why then did man chose the heart to be the symbol of the emotion "Love"? Why not the brain?! I mean, it would be more sensible to tell your lover that you have her/him at your brain (i.e you think about them always and care for them), than at your heart (just a meat that pumps blood)! Any body who can give me some light on the issue pliz?!Am much concerned and need to change things.

From the beginning heart was associated with the feelings, emotions etc. But, there was a lot of scientific material supporting brain as the centre of feelings, emotions etc.
But, now it is scientifically being considered as Heart also has a definite role in our feelings ,emotions.
Many patients who received heart transplantations acquired the thought processes, feelings, emotions and artistic abilities of the persons (donors who died) from whom they received hearts.For an example a person who was not very well educated received heart from a young man who died in accident, The young man was a poet with an ability to write good poems. After the transplantation the recipient who was not well educated developed the talent of poetry and was writing similar to the died person.
The above scientific research was in fact shown on a Television programme by BBC (Horizon) recently
So, after all our ancestor were not wrong for associating the feelings and emotions with heart.

I guess since the heart is the organ that keeps the body goin and love keeps us livin then they relate to each other so they use the heart as a symbol. U ever notice if something bad happens to u even when u not thinking about it then. nd when some people think they in love they have a burning sensation so that why the heart is related to love.

1st off why do you think about these things? 2nd It's easier to draw little hearts then to draw little brains. 3rd without your heart your brain would be useless then heart is the most important part of your body. Look at Teri Shivo, she was brain dead but her heart still worked so she was still alive. A heart is a good representation of love because it carries the blood to everything else though out your body so you're say that every part of you loves someone.

The heart was probably chosen because when you feel that lurch of love in your system it seems like its coming from your heart, even though its probably your stomach! But your brain is a much more logical place, for most of us, and emotions are very illogical and seem completely out of our control sometimes. So, to say that someone was in your brain would be kind of emotionless. But, to say that they were in your stomach would seem kind of screwed up.

Hi,Akady, Do you really think you would tell your lover,that you love them from the brain.That sounds so dum,and it just doesn't sound good together.It's alway been i love you from the heart.See what a nice ring it has to it.The heart may not be for emotions,But it makes you think it is.Love from the heart,is from the heart,and your heart is life.So to me it makes sense,it shows caring and love from your heart.That's why the heart is the symbol for love.

Even though, you feel with your brain, when you see the person you love, automatically your heart pumps faster, and when something good or bad happens with that person you still feel it in your chest close to your heart, eve though it is the brain that is giving that command.
When that person goes away, you suffer in your heart. (it´s proven to get tiny hart attacks when you feel too much pain)

brain u mean like chemicals and such? I think it's a heart thing so I disagree, and have no idea. A heart is better then a brain?

It was made up by greeting card companies because a heart is much prettier than a brain.

-If u have ever been in love u would know why. Science doesnt understand love, it will always remain a mystery. When u actually experience it, I guarantee it will make sense to u, theres no other way 2 explain it...
