Junk is hidden all over your computer that you can get rid of.
1: Use Add/remove programs, and remove anything you nolonger use.
2: Use a good disc cleaner to clean the registry, temp folders etc
http://www.toniarts.com/products.php
This is the Free Toniarts Easycleaner
3: To get that bit of extra space if your system is up to date and stable, you can delete the Windows Update files, but you need a program to do it.
http://www.dougknox.com/
and download "Remove Hotfix Backup"
As with anything, back it all up before, and create a resotre point just in case.
All this can free upto 5GB on a big well used drive.
Best of luck

My personal favorite is CCleaner (a.k.a. Crap Cleaner). The download link is http://www.ccleaner.com/. Here is a short list of features:
CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. That removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less that a second to run) and Free.
Cleans the following:
* Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat.
* Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Log files.
* Recently opened URLs and files.
* Third-party application temp files and recent file lists (MRUs).
Including: Firefox, Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office XP, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and more...
* Advanced Registry scanner and cleaner to remove unused and old entries.
Including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more... Backup for registry clean.
* Windows Startup tool.
You might also want to take a peak at some other tweak and optimization utilities for Windows at : http://www.filehippo.com/software/cleaning/

if you take my advice, stay well clear of any kind of pc-optimisation software, they speed up your p.c only slightly by deleting programs and settings that sometimes you need,i found this out the hard way when i ran one through a compaq amarda ,and it wiped out my pcmcia drivers....so beware
extra ram is the only sure fire way of improving your p.c,s running, but there is a good download for safe use...ccleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com/)can be ran at the end of every day to clean up all the temp files, ect that have accumilated over the course of that day
good luck

I'd go with Ccleaner, its safe and free.
Also look for TweakUI on the Microsoft website, it lets you tweak all sorts of Windows settings without touching the registry.
