I recently began communicting with an ex lover. We are both married now. We have families and live far apart. Is it ever safe to explore those old feelings or does someone always get hurt.

No... that's not a good Idea, and yes, someone is gonna get hurt, weather it be you, her, her family and your family.
Look, you have a family now, and she has hers. Let bygons be bygons and if you care about her (don't tell me you do, cause then I'll vomit again) then let her have her life. What would you do if some ex of your wife came back into her life trying to "reconnect"??......

Never. You answered your own question. You are both married now. Imagine right now that your husband is cheating on you and how you would feel. Because if this old lover of yours has a relationship with you, that is the same thing. Would you want to be with a man who cheated on his wife and children? Remember too.....once a cheater, always a cheater. If he left his wife and kids to be with you, one day he will cheat on you.
How about YOUR husband and children?

Terrible idea. You should only be exploring unresolved feelings about your past with your husband. Stop communicating with your ex-lover immediately, or you are in for a world of hurt.
