I just got a 1year old male chihuahua last night from a friend of mine that just couldn't spend enough time with him. I don't know a lot about this breed. Is there anything special about him that I should know about to make sure I am taking care of him properly?

Get him neutered, if he isn't already.

Also, tiny breeds like Chihuahuas need to be kept warm. They're so small they can't stand long periods of time in the cold. These are dogs that sometimes really do need to wear a sweater on occasion.

Be careful not to let him around larger dogs unless you can closely supervise the dogs. Chihuahuas often have more bravery than brains and sometimes go after dogs much larger than themselves. While this may be "cute", it can be dangerous if the larger dog decides to get physical in a confrontation. Even if the larger dog doesn't "mean" to hurt the Chihuahua, damage can happen. One of the major injuries caused by confrontation between large and small dogs is that the little dog's eyes get shoved out of their sockets.)

Speaking of eyes: If your Chi has eye that protrude, you'll also need to keep a close watch on him to make sure he doesn't get eye infections or "dry eye".

Otherwise, enjoy him!

the most important thing in caring of any pet is making sure it has a good, warm, comfy, clean home.

A chihuahua is a very energetic pet and it will need a lot of attention. You must show your affection to it by spending a few moments playing and relaxing.

And there's another thing you should know: don't leave it alone for very long time especially now when it's getting used to you!

The rest is usually...
Buy special food... Take it to the vets... And let it know that you love it... the rest will come from itself...

Go to www.akc.com & see if you have any Chihuahua clubs nearby & go to a meeting. These are mostly dedicated breeders who will know all the ins & outs of their breed, and can help with any questions. If not, contact the national club for information. Get a book on Chihuahuas from the library. Take him to a vet for an intial check-up & they will be able to answer your questions, also. Try to spend time with him to bond and help him get used to his new home. Good luck!

The best thing you can do for your new little firend is do lots of research on th ebreed. Use the internet (google is great) and/or buy a book on chihuahuas. I recently saw a book on special care and training needs of small breed dogs at PetSmart

I have two females. And there really is not any special to do.
They require alot of love. Be very careful around small children, they could step on him. Do not feed him pig ears some the smaller dogs choke on them. Also keep him warm in the winter, you could buy him a sweater. And the male like to tickle in the house, put him in a crate while you are gone. Good luck, Lot of Love. Chihahua's are the best pets I ever had.

They love there dogie beds.Don't be shocked if your dog is eating bugs chihuahuas are little bug eaters.I wouldn't spray any pesticides. They are really cuddly dogs and playfull and alot of them like to be carried around. There not the type of dog to leave alone alot or at all. They make very good pets.some baby chihuahuas can temporary get hypoglycemia they grow out of it it will make them shake alot and they will need a little sugar and some warmth. It sounds like yours might be out of that.Check websites and read up theres alot of good sites out there
