Generally, missionaries are supported by missionary organizations who receive their funding from various churches and individuals. Missionaries can also receive funding from churches and individuals. As far as I know, the government does not financially support missionaries.

Christian missionaries have to raise their own support. My aunt was a missionary. Every missionary I have met has had to raise their own support. They usually will speak at various churches while on furlough or prior to leaving and travel until they can raise enough monthly pledges. Many people are unable to go to the mission field because they cannot raise enough funds.
What many people may not understand is that the missionaries not only have to raise their monthly support, but also raise funds for air fares, moving their supplies, plus supplies for the mission projects they are on.

For more and better information, get in touch with various missions groups. eg: The Salvation Army, Operation Mobilization (www.omcanada.org), Bridges for Peace (www.bfp.com). In your usual search engine, type: missions and see where that leads you. Also you can check with the churches in your area. Most if not all people working in the various missions organizations are self supporting. Very few if any are supported by the government except through tax exemptions.

Well, I can't answer for every church, but the LDS church missionaries pay their own way. They make a lot of personal sacrifices to go out and give service. It's pretty amazing when you think about it. Talk about "good fruits". :-)

No, the churches support them. Twice a year we have specific mission drives and then we have a couple ofsmall ones we support as a church.

I don't believe so. Mostly, the church or christian organization they are a member of funds them. Or, they raise the money themselves.
