Ethlyene , and you also need a co-monomer like pentane or hexene. Hexene's pretty good.
You do also need diluents during the reaction process- cyclohexane or isobutane are quite often used.
Sorry, I should add that these are all products of the petroleum industry. And - contrary to common perception- there are NO toxic by products, everything is recycled or used as fuel in other parts of the refinery complex. A lot of heat is wasted during the process though.

you take raw crude oil, break down the ingredients to
the raw chemicals and atoms, like carbon, hydrogen
nitrogen, and oxygen, and various chains of atoms
and molecules, then put in other raw chemicals
for colour and material properties, and, as everyone
sayes, you get some bad for the environment stuff,
with lots of toxic by-products along the way
Note that you can get margarine by moving a few atoms
around, or mashed instant potatoes, again by changing
a few atoms... aspirin, pharmaceutical drugs, cloth,
etc. all the same stuff.
