data on XP: put blank in CDR drive, select open writable CD folder. drag on drop folders you want into the CD window. on the left side menu column click burn files to CD and follow directions

Music on XP: simplest (not necessarily best). put blank in CDR drive. select burn music cd using windows media. on the burn to cd section (usually left side) drag and drop music files you want into that field. click start burn button.

There are some really simple CD/DVD burning programms that works well. One of my personal favorite is Clone CD, if you can get your hands on that it'll make burning CD/DVD's simple.
