Be careful with over-the-counter meds. Anything that is too drying can actually make sinus congestion and headaches WORSE. You need remedies to help them drain first, otherwise drying agents will just turn all that yucky congestion into cement.

Steam helps... if you have access to a health club with a steam room, go for it. Otherwise, pour boiling water into a bowl (and you can add some essential oils like eucalyptus or rosemary) and, being very careful not to scald yourself, gently inhale the steam. Alternatively, you can just warm up and sooth your sinuses by lying down with a warm, wet washcloth over your eyes for a while. Then you can do some gentle sinus massage including stimulating the sinus acupressure points at the temples and under the eyebrows... this helps with drainage.

Depends on whether you want temporary relief or you want to eliminate the cause from the root. You have seen lots of the answers for temporary cure. You can keep trying them until your immune system gets programmed to combat a particular set of allergens. Sometimes it may not even work due to various factors of how your body has been conditioned from type of foods you eat, lack of nutrients, your breathing pattern, tons of medications you take, etc.
Once you follow all the above, you will not get sick again. Even if you get symptoms be alert and follow the above steps rigorously until symptoms are gone.
Permanent cure is possible by adapting more and more natural style of living which includes consumption of whole foods, mostly raw and fresh, avoiding all junk food (fried or processed) and refined sugar based foods, minimum half hour of exercises (stretching, cardiac, burning), deep breathing exercises, juicing (veggies and fruits) and finally programming your mind that cure is possible. Focus on stimulating points in the sinus area when they start bothering. Assure yourself that nothing dangerous is entering the nose and believe it completely. This re-programming trains the immune system to accept the so called "allergens" which are in fact just naturally occurring harmless particles.
Once you start to follow it for few months, you will noticed you are not getting sick anymore. That avoids doctor visits as well as cost on medications. Medicines only slow down the healing process. Only your body knows how to heal.

There's some stuff my dr recommended because I was having constant sinus infections and problems. It's called Sinus Rinse, by Neilmed. You can look up Neilmed online and even order it. You mix this saline solution with warm water and squeeze it up one nostril and it goes up into your sinuses and comes out the other nostril. Since using it I haven't had a sinus infection!!! It's wonderful!!!
Sounds uncomfortable, but it is not half as bad as I expected. Once you get used to it and feel the difference it's worth it!

try zicam its an over the counter herbal remedy that has worked for me, i live in the south were the humidity, heat and pollen really
make it difficult for allergy sufferers. also add echinecea to your daily regime its an herb also....just a note though i'm not against other stuff like dayquil, nyquil and stuff like that its just i've tried all that and also prescribed meds and they never seemed to do any good. good luck and make sure the ingredients you find on the bottle aren't something that would mess up any meds you are already taking....

Actifed works but will make some people tired. Sudafed is pretty good too without the tired affects. You're right - summer colds seem to be worse for some reason. I think allergies get involved because it is summertime too.

Try a combination of 12 hour mucinex and a 12 hour antihistamine/decongestant combination (like Allegra-D or Claritin-D).

Also, try steam therapy (either in the shower or with a humidifier) and drink lots of fluids.

Feel better and good luck!

If it's just a cold, and not a chronic sinus problem - have you tried Afrin? Works in like 15-20 seconds.

Agreed! I have a cold now too. It might just be alergies, you should try some alergy meds, or get to a doctor for a diagnosis and a perscription.

your sinuses usually get stuffed for a reason. summer is full of allergens that can do this. have you ever got tested for allergies? if you get tested then it would be easier to get prescription medicine that is specific to your kind of allergies. also, my sinuses get clogged in the early morning because of the fans i have blowing on me all night because of the heat.

Similar to what voandginger said but I've used warm salt water. I've had my nose busted a bunch of times and prior to surgery it was difficult to get my nose to drain properly. I doc suggested this. It works.
